EFLTC Newsletter

15th January 2021

From The President

Happy New Year everyone.
Personally I’m not one for new year resolutions, but it’s a good time to pause and ask …. What are our goals for 2021?
For EFLTC they include:
  • Put the finishing touches on the Hall Upgrade (signage, garden, entrance and deck)
  • Bring all our grass courts back into play and returned to their best condition
  • Resurface the Western Hardcourts and look at improving spectator viewing and shading
  • Save up for our connection to the Sewer, and decommission our septic tank (how exciting)
  • Seek funding support for the Western Hardcourt flood-lighting project
  • Develop concepts for Clubroom Improvements and the potential Table Tennis Pavilion
  • Continue to attract new players to our Club through tennis and social events, promotion and coaching
  • ……. And more, including making all the usual (and some new) tennis and social events on our calendar happen!
We’ve achieved a lot in the last few years, and we’re heading into 2021 as confident as ever.
Thank you to the many Giving Legends of our Club that help make it all happen.
The great Arthur Ashe once said “From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.”.
As we head into 2021, let the giving, and the living, continue.

Member News

It’s been a busy Summer of Tennis already for some of our keen young players. Peyton Duckett has found success winning the 14U Doubles State UTR, 14U Singles and Doubles at the City of Joondalup Silver Hardcourt, East Freo Junior Classic UTR (mixed 18U singles), 18U Singles at Robertson Park JT and the Alexander Park Silver JT.  Wowie!
Talia Edgar also did well winning the 14U Singles at Robinson Park JT and the 14U doubles at the Alexander Park Silver JT.

EFLTC vet Ian “Jolly” Rodgers was also in the winner’s circle taking out the Over-40 Doubles at the Mt Lawley UTR with Simon O’Brien.

Flushed with (largely unfounded) confidence, Ian (pictured right) then had a crack at the Open Singles at the Alexander Park AMT – where his dream run was finally stopped in the third round of Qualies.

Tennis Trivia

Name the Australian player beaten by Serena Williams in the first round at the Australian Open in 2014?

Ashleigh Barty

Ashleigh Barty was a wildcard entry into the tournament, but drew the short straw at her home Major, drawing the player who in 2013 had her most dominant season ever. It wasn't therefore surprising she only managed to win three games off the American.
