From The President

Brian, Janine and I met with staff from the Town of East Fremantle (our Landlord) last week – mainly to discuss why lighting our Western hard courts is so important to us, and how we might fund it. Their feedback in a nutshell is that the Town’s limited funding is not likely to flow in our direction any time soon (years). This includes funding for the $110k sewer connection that we promised to complete by August 2023 to secure DBCA approval for the Hall Upgrade, which we are busy saving for. The Town’s offer to pay for the sewer connection in exchange for two tennis courts still stands, as does our rejection of that offer.

So, despite a long list of exciting Club improvements in the pipeline, we need to watch the finances carefully for the next few years.
Personally, I will continue to spruik our projects, and our Club, at every opportunity to anyone (with money) who will listen.
You can do your bit by telling anyone who will listen what a great sport Tennis is, and why EFLTC is the best place to play it.
See you on the courts for some vigorous exercise and of course, please remember to wear your mask when not playing.

Western Hard Courts to be Resurfaced in April
Our worn-out green hard courts are booked in to be resurfaced in April (between the Summer and Winter pennant seasons).
This is something we plan for every 10 years or so, and have socked away the funds required in anticipation of this.
We’ll resurface with the same colour and similar acrylic surface (not gel like the blue courts, which is VERY expensive).

Fran's Club History Quiz Decathlon

Welcome to Fran's Club Quiz Decathlon
  • This quiz will have 10 rounds, one round each week.
  • Questions will be who, what, where, when in nature, or a combination.
  • Each week, the first correct answer emailed to eastfreotennisclub@gmail.com will win a free drink from the bar.
  • If a person is first to correctly answer a quiz question for a second time, the prize will go to the next correct answer. So there will be ten first answer winners. Information for the questions comes from the newly created Club Archive Files, which are held in Fran’s home office.
  • Each week, the first three people with the correct answer will go in the barrel to win the grand prize AND a fridge magnet. That’s at least a one in thirty chance, without having to spend any money.

Tennis Trivia

A Bit of History
In 1896, the regular columnist in the Morning Herald, writing under the pseudonym ‘The Master’, explained:

“Lawn tennis is in a very backward state in this colony, not on account of the want of players – and good ones – but because of their inability to obtain grounds on which to put down courts.  There are plenty of tennis enthusiasts to form a few clubs in Perth alone, and if only these could be started, and a couple of courts put down for each of them, an association would soon be formed, and the game boom.”

‘The Master’ frequently appealed to ‘capitalists or representatives of capitalists’ to lay down courts and lease them to a club at a fair interest rate. However, there did not exist a reasonable prospect for this type of investment.  So it was necessary to approach local government bodies for land and funds.  These authorities, faced with requests for help from many more popular sports, were understandably reluctant to fund tennis. a relative newcomer.
