From The President

How did I get here?
My tennis story began in Baulkham Hills, Sydney.
Fourth of five kids, I grew up in a competitive household - footy, soccer, cricket, baseball, brandings, bike riding, and bull-rush in the park opposite, tennis on the road, and skateboarding down the hill with my mates.
After a few false starts, Mum decided tennis was the safest, cheapest, most logistically feasible sport that our entire family could enjoy, and Dad started teaching us how to play by scrap-booking Borg’s “how-to” cartoons from the Australian Tennis Magazine (our version of YouTube), and by regularly waking us rudely early with a gentle “Anyone for tennis?”, to squeeze a game in before he went to work (we pretended to be asleep a lot).
The Hills District Tennis Association was our stomping ground, consisting of an amalgamation of 10 or so small local tennis Clubs.  We’d play as a family at nearby Crestwood TC (where we weren’t allowed to play with the grown-ups), got coached by my mate’s Dad (at mate’s rates) on the sand courts at Castle Hill TC, and play comp and tournaments at Dural TC (where we spent a lot of time “just being kids” in the nearby bush between matches). We’d also travel more broadly to play State tennis tournaments where I’d routinely get beaten by the “proper” players. I think I lost 6-0 6-1 to Todd Woodbridge once – the closest I got to being famous. Small fish, big pond. Travelling with inter-regional school teams was fun (but I got homesick), then High School got in the way and I didn’t play for a few years, until I moved to Perth and met Pete Slyth (a Geo student at UWA), who was looking for a good hit between lectures. We got on well (on and off-court) and….in a nutshell.…spent the next 10 years like a local version of the Woodies, playing State League Pennants (Wembley Downs) and tournaments throughout the state.  We won a few.
“But you’re crap at tennis.” was Pete’s invaluable advice when I suggested taking a gap year to have a proper go at a tennis career. So instead, I graduated, met Narelle (who liked me because I played tennis “ok” and could restring her tennis racquets for free). Narelle and I travelled to Europe to play the French money-tournaments for one summer (where Narelle’s forehand paid the bills), and that was enough of that.
Marriage, Kids, EFLTC.
