From The President

What A Weekend
Smarting from the semi-final loss in the final Match Tie-breaker of the day by our Saturday Div 2 Men the day before, but equally inspired by the against-all-odds come-from-behind win by our Ladies Div 1 side at Peppy Grove on the same day, it was with a steely determination that the EFLTC Men’s Sunday 35+ team decided to stare down an early 1-3 deficit in our semi-final on Sunday against top-of-the-ladder, and undefeated (invincible, some would say), Blue Gum Park. With a gammy arm, and without having hit a single tennis ball for 3 weeks, Master Yoda slowly stood up, threw his walking stick away and pronounced “Roll the dice, time it is for.”, or perhaps “Die wondering, I will not.”…..or both.
Two hours and 7 sets later, we had clawed our way back to even-stevens, at 5-games-all in the final set of the day. Deferring to the team accountant and young apprentice Glen, “We just need ONE more game 😲!!”, was the call from the stands.
So it was that Master Yoda steeled his gaze on his opponents (which included Shaun Rudman, once ranked 102 in the world (ATP Doubles), and 910 years younger than Master Yoda), shook off the aching in his right arm, and tossed the ball for the first serve of one of the most important games of his tennis career (ok, there hasn’t been that many). Boom! Into the bottom of the net it went at about 35km/h.
Now, it’s at moments like this that you must transcend. Trust your instincts. Visualise positively. “Use the Force!” as ObiWan would say. “If you think, you’re dead!” as Maverick would say.
SLICE! Bang!....and then crack goes an airborne Yoda, completely wrong-footing the Predator (Shaun) stalking at the net, and rifling the volley down the line just like John Peers would have done it.
Left-handed fist-pump….c’mooon!
Back and forth the game went until the young Jedi Sasha Ristic landed the killer blow with a volley to space.
So it was written, that our Saturday Ladies Div 1 team will head to Scarborough TC, and our Sunday Div 1 Men will head to Higgins Park TC for a shot at their titles this weekend

Impressive semi-final wins by our Junior teams mean our 15U Div 2 boys will play at Scarborough, our 13U Echidna Green-ball kids (pictured) will head to Kingsley, and our 13U Div 4 Green-ball kids will play at home against Safety Bay on Sunday morning.

It’s going to be an exciting weekend.
If you want some edge-of-your-seat entertainment, put on your Club shirt, head to one of these venues, and MAKE SOME NOISE!

Or catch the Club Champs action at EFLTC – it’s hotting up in more way than one this weekend.
Good luck everyone!

Meet our 250th Member

One minute with...  Chris Leslie

1.    How long have you been a member at EFLTC?  Almost 1 week (13th March 2021)

2.    What’s your favourite tennis shot?  Any shot that goes in! On second thought, a running forehand down the line is always nice, when they go to plan!

3.    What’s your Achilles heel?   I have been known to eat the whole packet in one sitting of Haighs Chocolate Drops (SA Chocolate company)

4.    Favourite tennis player?  It has to be Roger Federer. I remember watching a documentary when I was younger about how he spent a year rewiring his brain and increasing his mental aptitude towards the game. He knew that if he could get this in check then he would make it to world #1.

5.    Favourite holiday destination?  There are a few (for different reasons) 1) Driving holiday around Tasmania, AUS (Nature, Food and Wine is out of this world) 2) Snowboarding in Queenstown, NZ (A form of meditation for the soul) 3) Boat Cruises around Halong Bay, Vietnam (it just ticks the boxes)

6.    When not playing tennis, we can find you….?
Living in the moment with my beautiful family Amy, Ollie 3.5yo and Arlo 2yo and joining us in the next few weeks Harper. We are generally doing something outdoors or trying to find a way to burn the energy level of boys down.

We love meeting our members, so please don't be shy and introduce yourself by filling out the questions along with a photo.  click here to submit.

Fran's Club History Quiz

Answers to round six

In last week's quiz, you read an article written for the Tennis West Newsletter in 1992. It gave details about what our club was up to, including the recent Christmas function, and even listed all the veggies served at the dinner. Who wished everyone a happy new year was the President Phyllis Rothery. The spelling mistake in the article was 'sumptuous'.

Congratulations to Heather Edinger as the winner. Jane and Bill also go in the draw for being close. Thank you to Anne and Jayne for having a go.
Round Seven

How Time Flies.

This week the quiz is only open to members of less than 10 years. So if you joined the club after 2011, you are invited to play the Quiz.
Have a look at the picture and tell me Who are the three ladies and What is most likely to be in the glass?
