Our story: How to differentiate a graphic design studio

Kilian Feller is a graphic designer and in business for a few years now. Unlike many other designers, who just start up their business without a target group in their mind, he identified a niche market: motion branding. Only few companies – this was his statement – understand by now that identities do not need to be static and that motion will help to generate more brand awareness (we all now the famous Swisscom example). Kilian actually wanted and still wants to become the first person in Switzerland to be addressed if it comes to motion design in branding and corporate design. When he joined CC, he worked part-time for Swiss TV and part-time for his own company. During Creative Committed (CC), our course for (prospective) design entrepreneurs, he set out to write a financial and a business plan and kept on asking strategic questions on how to position his company on the market. For instance, one important question many designers ask, is, how to approach customers with more confidence. Kilian is now partnering with non-designers (e.g. an innovation consultant), who – on the long run – might help him to acquire new customers. Overall, Kilian was able to verify his hypothesis that there is a market opportunity in motion branding by taking a courageous step forward: He is about to found a limited liability company (a GmbH), left SRG for good, and now is successfully working fulltime for his own company (www.kilianfeller.com).

Know How: The furniture market in Switzerland

This is no ground breaking news: Designers often work in saturated markets. One of those is the furniture industry. These are the facts: In 2013, the Swiss furniture trade generated an overall turnover of 2.82 billion. Most of the turnover went to Ikea, the Conforama-group, and Möbel Pfister. In 2008, the furniture market peaked at approx. 3.1 billion; it is slowly going down ever since. Industry experts estimate that around 5% of furniture sales go to design labels; this corresponds to 300 Mio Swiss Francs per year (source: Handelszeitung, 18.9.2014).

News: Fashion Labels move their production back to Europe and Switzerland

Most young Swiss fashion and textiles labels follow a sustainable policy with respect to production. Many of them shy away from Asian manufacturers and are looking for “good” places in Europe. Some even found ways and means to produce here in Switzerland (see picture above). According to Tages-Anzeiger (24. November 2014) even established brands turn again to manufacturers in Europa such as Mammut or Schild. They claim business reasons as well as sustainable ethics for their decision: there are less costs for transportation involved; manufacturing costs in Asia grow because of increased local wages and drop in Europe because of the financial crisis.
