Newsletter Creative Hub No. 2 – Dezember 2013

Dear readers,
The Creative Hub has been around for 4 months now. Quite a short period of time! Nevertheless, we are currently involved with 20 (prospective) design entrepreneurs on their way to evaluate the opportunities connected to their products, services and business ideas. This newsletter informs you every few months about our activities, interesting developments in the area of design entrepreneurship, and it also lets you know about our calls. – Please note that this newsletter is in English as a compromise between German and French. I still hope you find it useful. If you wish to un-subscribe from it, please follow the instructions below.
With my best wishes for the soon-to-come holidays!
Claudia Acklin

A design renaissance. Really?

„This is the best time in history to be a designer“, writes Jeff Domke from Design Founders. I think so, too, because the role of the designer starts to encapsulate a lot more aspects (strategic, entrepreneurial, social, ethical, sustainable, etc.) than lets say form giving or problem-solving alone. Or else, it already had all these dimensions before but nobody talked about them much. It's a design renaissance says Jessica Alter, the woman behind Founderdating. However, when looking at the debate on designers as founders, co-founders or entrepreneurs we come across a controversy, or rather a dilemma. Alter asks “Why Aren’t There More Designer Founders?“ given this historic moment in time. Through her webpage she found that only 6% of all people wanting to be part of a multi-disciplinary founder team are professional designers. There are many more engineers (50%) wanting to connect. – But why are there so few designers interested in starting up a business with others and maybe even becoming an entrepreneur? More.

Ten companies joined the Creative Committed course

Crealumina (David Leuenberger), Creative Committed

Mid November we started our first Creative Committed course in Berne with ten companies on board. Some of them are already on the market but are seeking for ways to improve profitability or to expand to other towns or countries. Some are working on a business model and business plan for the years to come. If participants of the course succeed in putting together a proper business plan they will be able to pitch their ideas in front of a professional jury and maybe even of business angels. The participating companies represent a mix of different trades such as fashion (3), accessories/bags (2), shoes (1), a full service design studio (1), a motion-branding studio (1), illustration (1), customizable LED solutions, or furniture (1). More information about the participants you can find here.

The Creative Hub Info Tour

We are an almost virtual organisation: experts in their respective regions are coaching people from the same region, who are part of the Creative Link programme. So we decided to go on an information tour to present our activities and to get “real”. We were in Lausanne last month. And we will be in:

·       Basel, at Stellwerk on 18 December 2013, 17.30 hrs

·       Berne, at Progr, on 21 January 2014, 17.30 hrs

·       Lucerne, at Neubad, in February, date and time to be communicated

.       Geneva, at HEAD, date and time to be communicated
        (check our homepage for information).

2nd Call Creative Link

Designers that have a product or service prototype and want to receive coaching from experts on their way to place it on the market can apply for the 2nd round of the Creative Link programme. The deadline for submissions is the 15th of December 2013. Creative Link starts with a first in depth analysis of the projects with each designer on the 17th January 2014. The number of places in the programme is restricted. More information and the download of the application form you can find here.
