Newsletter Creative Hub No. 1 – September 2013

 

This is our first newsletter – ever! This newsletter is written in English as a compromise between German and French; I must say my French is just not good enough, and we rather spend our money on coaching designers than on translations. Nevertheless, I hope this suits you. If you want to un-subscribe from this newsletter right away, then please follow the instructions below. On the other hand – we would be very happy if you forwarded it to friends and colleagues.
 
The Creative Hub was introduced to the public in June 2013 at the Design Miami in Basel and, officially, started to work mid-August. This newsletter will inform you about interesting developments in the area of design entrepreneurship and – of course – let you know about our calls and news from our network partner.

Design entrepreneurship is quite a hot topic at the moment – at least in the USA. Dan Brown has been blogging about it and the Design Management Institute in Boston is promoting it. There are quite a few big companies that have been founded by designers together with other professionals such as IT specialists like: YouTube, Airbnb, Slideshare, Pinterest, Pulse, and many more (for more see the info grafic on the Designer Fund webpage). According to Brown it’s not only the technology anymore that will make companies successful but good human-centred design. However, who ever tried to found and fund an enterprise looks at it with a bit more sobriety. Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson on Core 77 gives 7 tips to future design entrepreneurs such as: “Most new design businesses do not make much money at first, so you'd do well to figure out some other method of paying the rent — especially if it complements your design enterprise.” One of my favourite podcast is “The Entrepreneurial Thought Leader Seminar”, where many (serial) entrepreneurs (not necessarily designers) talk about their experiences in creating new ventures and their expertise to do so. By the way, research studies say that an entrepreneur only gets it right after his fifth try; hey – you have to start somewhere!

Successful right from the start

In June, we sent out a call for the first Creative Link programme. 17 designers and design teams applied! We were surprised and delighted. Instead of admitting only 4-5 designers as planned we invited 10 teams and single persons to be coach by our experts. There are three fashion designers, six product designers/teams, and a graphic design team. Their projects are up on our projects page. Amongst the chosen you will find people that just about finished school, some that were nominated for the Federal Design Competition, or designers that want to find out how to create their own micro brand. 

1st Call Creative Committed – some places available


Creative Committed is an action-learning course for (prospective) design entrepreneurs, which extends over a period of 9 months. Each month, one workshop takes place leading from the idea to the business plan. Whoever wants to dig deeper into creating a (new) design venture or expanding an existing one, will have to do some intense thinking and planning. In the case of this course, you will have partners doing it along with you, and experts from various fields such as design management, business administration, finance, marketing, branding, etc. coaching you. The deadline for the application is the 15th of October; the start of the programme takes place on 15 November 2013. The course is held in English, so “les Romands” and the German-speaking participants can mix and communicate.

2nd Call Creative Link


Designers that have a product or service prototype and want to receive coaching from experts on their way to place it on the market can apply for the 2nd round of the Creative Link programme now. The deadline for submissions is the 15th of December. Creative Link starts with a first in depth analysis of the projects with each designer on the 17th January 2014. The number of places of the programme is restricted.

French version of our website
Our website is and will also be in the future “multi-lingual”, meaning there are French, German and English texts – sometimes even mingled within one language version of website. However, the main contents are available in French now (new!) and in German.
