#1 ‘ENTHUSIASTIC PRE-IPO ENTREPRENEURS’

More than one in four of the 50 largest VC-backed companies to go public since 2019 made assertions about their profitability that don’t appear to line up with their later disclosures. When their executives spoke of profitability in broad and optimistic terms in the years before their IPOs, they were relying on alternative profitability metrics such as “adjusted EBITDA” or “structural profitability.”

#2 CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN STARTUPS COMING OF AGE

Bolt, Wise, Rohlik, Vinted, UiPath, GitLab and Pipedrive. CEE is producing startups that would be envy of any ecosystem. With startup value up 19x in the last decade, investment on track to 3x in 2021, and 34 unicorns born in the region, CEE’s got a lot to shout about. Dealroom' new report explores the CEE ecosystem development.

#3 ‘FOCUSED RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS’

Some scientific and technical challenges slip through the gaps of existing research because they’re not quite a fit for academic labs, or startups, or other organizations doing R&D. But a new organization called Convergent Research, the philanthropic initiative, is designed specifically to take on the problems that can’t easily be addressed elsewhere.

#4 VENTURE DEBT: US VS EUROPE

For an entrepreneur, there are various ways to finance your startup. If you are just starting out, the first thing that usually comes to mind is putting in your own money and approaching friends or family members to help out. While the money raised this way is likely not going to be incredibly high, it should be enough to start your business.

#5 WHY WERE THE BALKANS UNDERDEVELOPED?

The Balkans' income level is much lower than the average income level of Western and Central Europe. The median GDP per capita in Western Europe is around $40,000. Balkan countries’ incomes range from a bit over $10,000 to just over $20,000 (excluding Greece). In other words, the gap between Western Europe and the Balkans is at least 2 to 1, and on average about 3 to 1.
