Body Image Issues

"If you want my body and you think I'm sexy"... I probably don't.

Happy Spring,  EFTer.

As summer moves closer and we are unwrapping our winter-bound bodies more and more, I've been noticing the staggering number of people with negative perceptions about their bodies. It is absolutely rampant in our Western cultures.

If it isn't that we're too big (I'll cover weight-release in a future newsletter), it's that our eyes are too close together, we're too short, our nose isn't straight enough or our skin's not the right colour. It seems like the "right" look belongs to about 50 people on the planet and the rest of us can forget it.

What's Real and What's Not?
Just so we know what we're dealing with in body image issues, I'm posting this video that you may have already seen. It shows us very clearly how unrealistic our societies' and, as a result, our own expecations about our bodies are. This is true for both men and women (video: 1m 10s):

Well, I don't know about you but my waist and stomach don't look anything like even the "Real Proportions" Barbie, forget about the other one.

Making Peace with Who We Really Are
We are each made in a unique mold and, until we accept and love ourselves as we are, it's very hard for others to love us or to treat us with the care and respect that we deserve.

My own most powerful personal experience with this a body image issue was around my thighs. To change my feelings, I looked in the mirror at them and did a lot of tapping. I was quite hardcore about it. I poured out all my hatred and shame while I tapped around and around. Words like "they make me sick" and "disgusting cellulite" were part of what came up at the time. I'm happy to report that I have not paid attention to my thighs since that day about 5 years ago. Before that, they were a constant point of emotional discomfort and embarrassment for me.

Below is a kind and gentle video for shifting your perspective on your body. Eric's tapping style and points are not the usual North American fare, so if you're having trouble following his lead, just close your eyes, follow his voice and tap along using the style and points that work for you. I really like the wording he chose.

If after watching this video, you find you didn't get complete peace around whatever body part is bothering you, you can always try my more radical way of tapping on it, as I described above. Just give me a shout if you need some help.

Our Bodies Need to Be Appreciated
Above all else, we need to see the good in our body, what it does for us, what it allows us to accomplish and how well built it really is.

It will respond kindly when we begin to experience how essential it is to us and how lucky we are to have it (BTW, we would be dead otherwise. Good to remember!), whatever shortcomings we may believe we perceive.

Here's a great article reminding us how to see our bodies in more positive ways:

Renewing Our Vision
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder so let's tap on our negative perceptions of our bodies and allow others to behold us, to find us beautiful. Let's learn how to see ourselves from their example.

A very interesting video came to my inbox today just as I was preparing to send this out. If you are interested in this subject, here is a woman who is on a mission to make a global change to our body image perceptions.

Body issues can run deep. It would be my pleasure to support you in growing toward more self-love, from wherever you are at this moment.

My next event will be a Vision Boards class in English down at the Spiritual Science Fellowship (SSF) and another the week after at BelArôme. It's always so fun and inspiring to see the future people build for themselves. I hope to see you there!
