Ana Sumner - Sew Unique Art
Remembering Beginnings

"In All Its Glory"

The wind blows gently
sitting on the soft beach sand
all is a muffled
by the sound of the rolling waves
from time to time I hear
the laughter of children playing
as I ponder the vastness of the sea,
the radiance of the sun,
and my being within them.

I spent this last weekend at the beach with my daughter-in-law and her mother, sister, and nephew. I was reminded of why the beach is so special to me. We had such a wonderful time getting to know each other, and just enjoying the beauty that was around us. It was that beauty that inspired my creative spirit and ignited the creative fires within. The below picture I took at Topsail Beach, and above is my interpretation of that wonderful day; of course I had to embellish a bit.

I have an opportunity to speak at the Asheville Quilt Guild on June 21st, and as I was preparing my lecture "Inspired by a Crazy Quilt," I looked at this quilt (picture below) and it made me remember my beginnings.  This is the first crazy quilt I had ever made, and in creating it I saw how creative I was.  This simple little quilt changed my life. It allowed me to explore a creative side of myself through design, color, and fibers and share how I saw the world. In this case, the beach was in the center of my inspiration. How appropriate, as I was recollecting about my art beginnings, that this little quilt reminded me that I will always have a love affair with the beach, and that it will continue to inspire me as I step into my creative expression.

  Artist's Notes
  • Thank you to all who stopped by the Innova booth at the Quilt Symposium in early June. I enjoyed meeting some of you for the first time, and it was also fun to see old friends. I had fun demonstrating the Innova sit down longarm, and showing all who came by how much fun it was to draw on the sewing machine.

  • The quilts on display were stunning and very creative. My favorite one was by Susan Owenby, (to follow her blog: http://theboredzombie.com/) who is continually pushing the limits of what you can do with a sewing machine. Below is the quilt she created and got 1st place for. Hard to believe this is a quilt.

  • The intermediate Silk Ribbon class is almost ready, it just got pushed back to July. There are just not enough hours in the day to do all I'd like to do.
  • I do have several events and classes coming at the end of June and July (see below). If you have not had the opportunity to see the art quilt show "Voices" at Page Walker, it will be there until July 2nd. Stop by and check out all the great art done in fabric.
Artist's Tips

Do not under estimate yourself and your creativity! Own up to it, especially if you do the hard work of allowing yourself to express your creative self. Our culture has an emphasis on being humble about accepting praise to the detriment of our creativity. We want to be creative, but we do not want to be proud about it. It has taken me a long time to be proud of what I do in my art, and to accept praise. I  now accept that praise, because I realized that I am allowing myself to tap into the creative spirit, and that is worthy of praise!
