The updated SOOS website is up and running! It's now easier than ever to find the latest news, data, and observations from SOOS. Resources available on the website include reports and publications, while the subscriber database is the place to go when trying to make contacts in your area. SOOS Metadata Portal
The SOOS Metadata Portal draws in records related to SOOS’ Essential Ocean Variables from all oceans south of 40, and from all repositories who feed metadata to the GCMD. The aim is to make sure that all Southern Ocean research data is safely stored in a data centre and that its associated metadata record is available through the SOOS metadata portal. Read more...

Quantarctica Survey
Reponses are sought for a Quantarctica user survey, to inform the 2017 version 3 release. The free, standalone open GIS package, built on the open-source, cross-platform QGIS software, was developed by the Norwegian Polar Institute for Antarctic science and mapping. While the current version includes glaciology/geophysics data as well as satellite imagery, oceanography is prioritized in the next version. Read more...

Satellite Data Community Review
SOOS, SCAR and WCRP’s CliC recently sanctioned a community review in order to provide a consolidated user voice on Southern Ocean requirements for satellite data. This review highlights both the success and shortcomings of existing polar remote sensing data, and articulates data requirements of future missions, specific to the Southern Ocean. Read more...

ORCHESTRA Project
The new SOOS-Endorsed UK project “Ocean Regulation of Climate by Heat and Carbon Sequestration and Transports (ORCHESTRA) has now been launched! The project includes major ship expeditions, autonomous vehicle deployments, and research aircraft campaigns. Data collected will be used to improve model schemes and validate model outputs, and the improved capability will be fed through to UK climate model development. Read more... |

Polar Challenge Launched
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation recently launched the “Polar Challenge.” This global competition, which comes with prize money of 500,000 CHF, asks respondents to become “the first to complete a 2000km continuous mission with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle under the sea ice.” Read more... |

Polar ICE
The Polar Interdisciplinary Coordinated Education (ICE) program recently received a 3 year grant. This project works to connect scientists with broader audiences to further the impact of their research, while connecting teachers and students from grade 5 through college with data and cutting-edge science right in their classrooms. SOCCOM Activities
The Southern Ocean Carbon & Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) Project is in its second season of deploying autonomous biogeochemical floats to make sustained observations of the carbon cycle. The project goal is to see ~200 floats deployed and operating in the Southern Ocean. Read more... |

Antarctic Edge is a 2015 feature-length award-winning documentary about climate change, directed by Dena Seidel, and created by filmmakers who joined the Palmer Long Term Ecosystem Research annual survey of the West Antarctic Peninsula. Read more...
