Facilitating and Enhancing Global Southern Ocean Observations

Issue 10, August 2016

From the Executive Officer

As always, it’s been a busy and productive few months for SOOS! The updates below cover recent SOOS meetings, the SCAR/SCOR Review of SOOS Progress, and an update on the SOOS Project Office sponsorship. Read more...

Interactive Map of SO Moorings

An interactive map of Southern Ocean moorings has been created, and SOOS needs your help to ensure the information is up-to-date and correct! Data from Southern Ocean moorings are stored in a wide variety of data repositories, and on researchers’ hard drives, where they are inaccessible. If you have data that needs processing, help is now available.  Read more...

New Co-Chair for DMSC

The SOOS data management sub-committee (DMSC) is very pleased to welcome Joana Beja as the new co-chair. She will help to lead our efforts in improving data sharing in the Southern Ocean. Read more...

DMSC Meeting Minutes

The SOOS data management sub-committee (DMSC) met in San Diego in May 2016 to set the agenda for a year of data management activities. Key outcomes and minutes can be accessed via the SOOS website. Read more...

Mooring Data at NCEI

Mooring data is a mainstay of oceanographic data collection, but data can be hard to find hard to find because they are held in disparate data repositories. SOOS and our partners in the US are beginning a project to make Southern Ocean mooring data that does not qualify for OceanSITES easier to find and share.  Read more...

NIC Sea Ice Product

The US National Ice Centrer (NIC) produces a range of Daily Ice Analysis Products relating to the ice edge in both the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as the Marginal Ice Zone. These products provide a daily edge position of the sea ice as lat/lon vertices, and have useful applications for those conducting ocean research in high latitudes. Read more...

OASIIS (Observing and Understanding the Ocean below Antarctic Sea Ice and Ice Shelves) is a new working group that has been established by the Partnership for Observations of the Global Oceans (POGO), with the aim of advancing under-ice observations in the Southern Ocean.  Read more...

With a focus on open ocean time series sites, the mission of OceanSITES is to collect, deliver and promote the use of high-quality data from long-term, high-frequency observations at fixed locations in the open ocean, and to provide data to all users in a common format. Read more...

YOPP-SH Meeting Update

The WWRP Polar Prediction Project (PPP) will see core observations take place in high latitudes between mid 2017 and mid 2019, and Antarctica and the Southern Ocean will play a crucial role. David Bromwich summarises the recent Southern Hemisphere planning meeting for the project, with YOPP-SH updates from a range of National Antarctic Programmes. Read more...

Ocean Observatories Initiative

Two new ocean observatories in the Southern Hemisphere have been installed as part of the U.S. NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative. Both "Argentine Basin" and "Southern Ocean" are now operational, providing their data openly to all users.  Read more...

SONA Update

The Southern Ocean Network of Acoustics (SONA) is a group of partners from Australia, France, New Zealand, Norway, the UK and USA who have united to measure the mid-trophic level of the ecosystem. They have agreed on common standards and protocols for acoustic data collection and processing, with a view to providing that data on an open access basis.  Read more...

DOOS Survey

The Deep Ocean Observing Strategy (DOOS) organizers are conducting a deep-ocean observation inventory to lay the foundation for development and coordination of regional, national, and global deep-ocean observing systems. Responses are currently sought from SOOS members.  Read more...
