From "Luck of the Irish" to a Life of Servant Leadership

You could say that Pat Rawson has had the luck of the Irish at times in his life. Back in 1958, after immigrating at the age of seven to the United States, Rawson — along with his mother and five siblings — had the uncommon fortune of being reunited with his father on the nationally broadcast show, “It Could Be You.” He then grew up amid a robust, growing Irish-Catholic family, which included another five siblings who were born in the states. However, immersed in such a big family, Rawson quickly learned not to rely on luck alone to get him by in life. He grew up learning the importance of faith, family and community, plus the value of having a strong work ethic. He learned not to take anything for granted — not his family, not his education, not his community, and not his country. Read more.

Golf Tournament Fundraiser Grows Endowment and Receives Matching Funds

Participants, volunteers and sponsors of Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation's 15th Annual Founder's Cup golf tournament helped raise approximately $18,000 for CGCC Foundation's permanent endowmentThis endowment benefit, sponsored in part by Columbia State Bank and Caithness Shepherds Flat Wind Farm, was a special opportunity to raise funds that will be matched dollar for dollar by a federal grant. Screening of the “Do The Math” movie by 350.org

Watch the thought-provoking movie "Do The Math" by 350.org and discuss the movie on Tuesday, November 4 from noon to 1 pm at The Dalles Campus in the Student Life Center (Bldg. 1, across the hall from the library).

Questions for the discussion:

  • Is the 350.org’s movie correct arguing that global warming is the most important issue facing humanity?
  • Are the solutions presented in the video accurate and feasible?
  • What does climate change mean to you and your community?


College-Wide Read of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Polan

Read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan and discuss the book on Tuesday, October 7, from noon to 1 pm in the CGCC Library in The Dalles. The discussion will be led by the CGCC Library Director, John Schoppert.

"The Omnivore's Dilemma" was named one of the 10 best books of 2006 by the New York Times.
