President's Message

Thank you all for attending and being a part of our annual awards banquet this year.  It was a great event and a fun night.

I said this last month and I’ll say it again, but we are celebrating our 50th year as a chapter.  Is that cool, or what?

If we look around Atlanta and most likely the state of GA we will see tower cranes, track cranes, precast beams shipping down the highway, concrete mixers driving down the interstates, etc… this can only mean one thing…. WE ARE BOOMING.

Concrete is everywhere. Two new stadiums coming to Atlanta are part of the reason Atlanta is thriving. This year is going to be busy and a great one for most of us. It is hard to believe that only a few years ago we were struggling and a lot of people were out of work and were out of work for months. Today we need to check and double check our outlook contacts to see who we should delete and update because there has been a lot of movement. With this being said, we now have an online membership directory so please make sure your contact information is correct. If it isn’t let me know.

We have an exciting year of speakers and events so please plan to attend our monthly luncheons and be a part of our chapter. We will soon be announcing our annual scholarship fundraising event and plan to switch it up this year. Stay tuned for more details.

We have submitted our ACI annual report and while we wait to see if we will once again be an “Excellent Chapter”, we still need more members. Our goal is to exceed 250 members by the spring. Tell your friends, colleagues, coworkers, etc. and sign up today.

Have a great month and see you on the 27th of February.

Georgia Chapter ACI, President

Awards Program & Banquet

The Annual Dan R. Brown Awards Banquet was held on January 22nd at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel. Approximately 150 attendees celebrated the many winners of this year's awards program and the successes in concrete design. Congratulations to all of this years winners!!

In addition to the awards winners, the chapter also celebrated our two scholarship winners for 2015. We were also honored to have ACI International President Bill Rushing join us for the evening and provide an update on the happenings of the national organization.

Chapters of Excellence

We are proud to report that the Georgia Chapter ACI has once again been named a chapter of excellence! Thank you to all of our board members and our many members for the work that you do for this organization.

We would also like to issue special congratulations to UGA for being named an Outstanding ACI University for 2014!

December Meeting Recap

We had a very nice group for our annual Holiday Reception and “Changing of the Guard” meeting.  I can’t help but think about “Sam” Morris every time I use that Changing of the Guard phrase, she always used to it in reference to this special year end meeting where we celebrate the past year’s successes and look forward to the next.  Retiring from the Board of Directors in 2014 was long time member Howard Allred, Steven Maloof and Immediate Past President George Harrison.  Joining the Board of Directors for 2015-2017 are Rick Tilson and Justin Lazenby.  Other changes were Angela San Martin, President; Wilbur Bragg, Vice-President and Vance Robinson, Immediate Past-President.

A special thank you was made for Vance Robinson’s two years of service as our President.  Vance had to very unexpectedly step in and fulfill the unexpired term of our 2013 President Chris Walker, who decided, on very short notice to accept a banking industry job in Charlotte, NC.  Vance did a tremendous job during a very difficult time for our ACI Georgia Chapter as we had to deal with the unexpected death of both Sam Morris and Diane Dial.  I would like to offer a personal Thank You! to Vance for helping us get through such a difficult time..

We also had a bonus presentation form one of our 2014 scholarship winners, Scotty Smith, UGA Engineering Student.  Scotty gave us a very entertaining review of The History of Concrete.  Some really cool pictures of some early cement and concrete making equipment…

Angela closed with a Speaker Cup presentation for Scotty and a President’s Service plague presentation for Vance.
