Upcoming Events Mix Fun and Education

Looking for fun, educational things to do with your kids this summer? Several upcoming events in Shreveport-Bossier will blend family-friendly fun with learning: 

The Shreveport Times and Louisiana Dance Collective will celebrate National Dance Day at Dancing in the Street on Saturday, July 30. The free, all-ages event promotes fitness and the art of dance. The 2nd annual Wheels in the Hills will offer kids the opportunity to explore more than 30 huge vehicles and machines like fire trucks, helicopters, bulldozers and more on Saturday, July 30.     

The Ark-La-Tex Gem and Mineral Society will host their 42nd annual Gem and Mineral Show, Aug. 20-21, at Bossier Civic Center. The event will include jewelry-making demonstrations as well as exhibitions of unique gems and minerals, fossils and arrowheads. R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport is celebrating the iconic book Alice in Wonderland with an exhibit entitled Down the Rabbit Hole, now through Aug. 21. The exhibit includes 13 rare lithographs by artist Salvador Dali, a signed first edition of Alice, a kids’ play area and a pop-up shop.

Geek’d Con Returns to Shreveport Convention Center, August 19-21

Fans of comic books, anime, science fiction and pop culture will not want to miss Geek’d Con 2016, a three-day fan convention taking place, Aug. 19-21, at Shreveport Convention Center. Celebrity guests announced to date include Tara Reid (Sharknado, The Big Lebowski, American Pie), Cassandra Peterson (better known as Elvira Mistress of the Dark), WWE Superstar John Morrison and a long list of comic book and anime artists, voice actors and more. In addition to panels, vendor booths and autograph signings, Geek’d Con will also include a cosplay costume competition for all ages.

Tacos from Parish Taceaux, a new “urban taqueria” in downtown Shreveport. New Restaurants Enhance Local Food Scene

It’s been a busy summer for Shreveport-Bossier’s local food and drink scene, with several new restaurants opening in June and July. Tejas, a Southwestern-inspired eatery serving steaks, Gulf seafood and more, opened on July 1 at 855 Pierremont Road in Shreveport. Menu highlights include a Texas-style chicken fried steak, grilled quail, bone-in pork chops and more. Read a full review of Tejas at

Parish Taceaux in downtown Shreveport also opened on July 1. Parish Taceaux, an “urban taqueria” serving tacos filled with everything from Nashville-style hot chicken to Korean BBQ, is located at 708 Texas Street in Shreveport. Popular Shreveport burger joint Twisted Root Burger Company has added a Bossier City location at 2578 Airline Drive. The restaurant, which opened on July 14, serves creative burgers and a large variety of local and regional craft beer in a dining room and patio designed to pay tribute to Barksdale Air Force Base.
