King Cake: A Tasty Mardi Gras Tradition

From crispy, sweet beignets to piping hot boiled crawfish, the iconic tastes of Carnival season in Louisiana can be found in many Shreveport-Bossier eateries. The king cake is a delicious Mardi Gras tradition that varies from one bakery to the next. At Tubbs Hardware, Cajun Gifts and King Cakes in Bossier City, the “X-Treme King Cakes” are made with a moist pastry dough and “an extreme amount of quality fillings” in flavors like cinnamon, praline and strawberry-cream cheese. Thousands of X-Treme King Cakes are sold each year and many are shipped to destinations around the world.

Julie Anne’s Bakery & Café in Shreveport offers two dozen varieties of king cake, including pecans and cream, blueberries and cream, and Black Forest versions. Located in Shreveport’s Highland neighborhood, Lilah’s Bakery is another popular local spot for king cakes. Lilah’s serves more than 20 varieties of cake, including gluten-free options.

Check out the 2016 Mardi Gras Gris Gris Guide for more info on where to find king cakes, Mardi Gras cocktails and more in Shreveport-Bossier!
