SPRING ACCOLADES ARE IN, SUMMER IS HERE, AS ARE NEW DROP-IN HOURS

In case you've been hibernating this spring, RVTV has had an exciting series of developments, none more so than the Southern Oregon Television Awards of 2018 (available for you on-demand).

If you would like to get involved, your RVTV volunteer producer community is planning way ahead -- the Third Annual SOTAs are set for Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 7 p.m. and the first planning meeting is a full six months in advance, on Friday, August 24 at 5:30pm in the DMC Classroom.

RVTV BAGS FIRST 'BEST OF THE NORTHWEST' AWARD THIS DECADE

For those producers with long memories, you'll remember the 'wall of fame' at the Digital Media Center, which was covered with honors for RVTV productions hauling home the honors throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

After a several year hiatus, six RVTV programs, as well as an overall excellence bid, were up for nomination in this year's Best of the Northwest Awards, hosted at the Northwest Media Summit this spring.

We're proud to announce that The Naz, produced every week by the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford, has won the Best Inspirational and Religious program in the Northwest for 2018!

RVTV Staff will be strongly encouraging independent producers to make their own program submissions when the next opportunity arises, so keep in touch and we'll look forward to another strong showing of nominees in 2019.

HARD & FAST DROP-IN HOURS STARTING IN JULY

We all like instant help when we can get it. We understand. But that's not what our local government partners (only Ashland and Medford since 2013) are funding when it comes to the Public Access producer community. It's a cruel reality, but one we must adapt to in order to survive going forward.

As such, we are announcing new Drop-In Hours, and making a firm, but clear point -- ASIDE FROM APPOINTMENTS, YOU ARE ONLY OFFERED DROP-IN SERVICES AT THE DIGITAL MEDIA CENTER DURING SPECIFIC DROP IN HOURS:

MONDAYS 3PM - 9PM
FRIDAYS 4PM - 8PM
SATURDAYS 9AM - 3PM

While this technically represents an *expansion* of drop-in hours, this comes with a proviso -- if you drop in unannounced outside of these hours and pester Brandon or Joe or the front desk staff with questions, comments, complaints, requests or anything else, you will be sent away. No exceptions. None. Zero. Zilch. So just don't.

We thank you for your understanding in this regard. This isn't what your author would prefer. But this is what we're stuck with. Direct your complaints to douglasc@sou.edu if you don't like it and they will be forwarded to the appropriate parties. Please (please!) don't drop-in outside drop-in hours to complain -- you will literally be worsening matters.

NEW DATES FOR INTERMEDIATE DIRECTING

Workshops in On-Set Networking and Green Screen were teased at our most recent studio producer's meeting, but with the proviso that these would not be held this next term without a sufficiently enrolled Intermediate Directing offering, as it takes completion of this pair of workshops to serve as the prerequisite for more advanced offerings -- in other words, we need a pool of Intermediate producers to make it possible to fill these other classes!

So...enroll in Intermediate Directing today by contacting Charles at douglasc@sou.edu and get set for these *new dates* in April:

Monday, September 10, 6-8pm - Production Design
Tuesday, September 11, 6-8pm - Production Process

Again, this two part workshop series is designed as the immediate follow-up to our basic Studio Certification process, not only for those producers who also wish to Direct, but for any producer who wants to up their game and learn advanced techniques to 'win the game before ever stepping onto the field.'

Production Design covers topics such as: Team building, coordination, pre-production elements, art direction, set design, plan for sound, plan for graphics, music selection. “The accompaniment parts.” Good practices. Planning to tell the story visually & with audio. Packaging and wrapping. Crew communication. Art & Sets, Camera & lights, Sound & Music, and Fonts/Colors/Graphics all coordinated.

Production Process covers topics such as: Developing the plan with your team, clear communication, shot progression, keeping it dynamic, moving the camera, where you would move it and why. Intercutting and transitions, using the rules to maximum effect. Speed & pacing, anticipating the conversation, increasing your rate of cutting. Talking fast & multitasking. Communicating with your on-set crew, differentiating this from communicating with your control room crew. Comparison of coordinated elements in action vs. divergent elements.

These intermediate workshops are team-taught by DMC Manager Brandon Givens (an exerpienced director of local newscasts for nearly a decade) along with Charles Douglas, and cost $35 each, $70 total -- and RVTV Staff is willing to work out a payment plan to make sure studio producers have access to this advanced training -- just call Charles at (541) 552-6898 to work out the details.

Lastly -- we know it's been a while since you received this Bulletin! We hope you will engage with the revised content we've included here, so click on the links, ask questions and, if you feel so encouraged, write something to your fellow producers! We welcome the use of this space to help you build capacity for your field productions, to recruit studio crewmembers or to help further our offerings to build non-commercial media here in Southern Oregon.

If you use this Bulletin, we'll make them more often. Click the links!

REMINDER: All cancellations must be made with 7 (seven) days notice, at the peril of losing all production timeslots for this quarter and the next. Yes, we really mean it -- no exceptions aside from documented death in the family, serious illness or other actual emergency. A guest cancellation is not a valid reason -- have a Plan B in place! Cancellations must be made in e-mail format and followed up for confirmation with RVTV staff. Only one unexcused cancellation per quarter!

The next RVTV Studio Producers Quarterly Meeting takes place on Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at the DMC Classroom, where we will bid out studio production timeslots for Fall Quarter of 2018.

PROGRAMMING SUBMISSION HOURS

Due to limited staffing at the DMC, we are asking producers to submit their field productions, promos and any other programs to Charles (or his student assistant during the rare times he has off) during these hours:

Mondays 3-9pm
Fridays 4-8pm
Saturdays 9am-3pm

This also applies to “walk-in consultations” – while we want to be open to inquires at all hours, the realities of limited staffing hours and increased operational demands make this a regrettable, but necessary request.

Call or e-mail in advance to make an appointment.
Please note that these program submission hours do not apply to any special appointments you’ve set up with RVTV staff – another incentive for pre-planned meetings – and you're able to use the Public Access Edit Lab any time of day that the lights are on at the DMC.
