The community of Public Access Producers was heard at the most recent Ashland City Council meeting on Sept. 16 when proposed revisions to the "Motion Picture and Radio/Television Productions" ordinance were considered.

The RVTV Public Access Advisory Board, which gives producers a voice in community access issues, was represented by Bob Ayres (pictured above), who presented concerns about imposing permit requirements on public access producers who aren't asserting exclusive use of City property.

After other public testimony and extensive discussion between Councilors and City Staff, the draft ordinance was withdrawn. You can watch the Sept. 16 Council Meeting at this link. Ashland Council meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m., and are always carried live on RVTV Prime (Channel 9/180).

Workshops Cancelled Due To Lack Of Enrollment

As we only had one participant enrolled for the Intermediate Directing pair of workshops, we have cancelled them for Oct. 1 & 8.

Due to this development, we have also cancelled On-Set Networking Advanced Workshops scheduled for Oct. 31 & Nov. 13.

Also cancelled are the brand-new Green Screen Fundamentals Advanced Workshops scheduled for Dec. 4 & 11.

As producers were informed in prior newsletters (both distributed via e-mail and posted at rvtv.sou.edu), RVTV Staff had received inquiries from producers looking to enhance their skills, which is why these workshops were developed initially nearly a year ago. They were meant to go hand-in-hand with technological improvements in the studio intended to help crewmembers enhance their production values.

Unfortunately, these expressions of interest were not followed up on by actual confirmed enrollments (which includes pre-payment in full). RVTV Staff cannot commit to hold workshops with fewer than three participants.

We are, however, sticking to the deadline mentioned at the Producers Meeting last month -- meaning that Green Screen access will no longer be available starting March 1st for those who have not successfully completed the Green Screen Fundamentals workshop series. Additionally, access to the On-Set Display, the studio laptop and the scan converter is not available to those who have not successfully completed the On-Set Networking workshop series. Completion of Intermediate Directing is required to take any Advanced Workshop.

If you are interested in getting any of these workshops rescheduled (and enrolling in them), please let RVTV staff know by phone, e-mail or in person.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE NOTES

Studio Production Times
for Fall Quarter 2014

REMINDER: All cancellations must be made with 7 (seven) days notice, at the peril of losing all production timeslots for this quarter and the next. Yes, we really mean it -- no exceptions aside from documented death in the family, serious illness or other actual emergency. A guest cancellation is not a valid reason -- have a Plan B in place! Cancellations must be made in e-mail format and followed up for confirmation with RVTV staff.

STUDIO TIMESLOT CANCELLATION NOTICE

As a result of cancellations in studio production timeslots (which were provided with at least one week of notice), the following times are available for use in the RVTV Studio:

Saturday, October 11th - 9am-Noon
Saturday, October 11th - Noon-3pm

Any studio-certified producer is eligible to bid for this production timeslot, first come, first served. We only ask that you follow through on producing your program if you reserve this time!

Drop Charles a line at douglasc@sou.edu if you're interested.

Above, "Dr. Mike" producer and host Michael Rhoades and in-studio guests Barbara Peeters & Marlene Mish engage in a conversation with RVTV Mentor Dean Walker live via Google Hangout from his locale thousands of miles away in Guatemala. The group took on the hot topic of 'Domestic Violence & Ray Rice' in back-to-back live episodes last month. "Dr. Mike" is shown on RVTV Voices (Channel 15/182) every Monday at 8:30 p.m. and Friday at 8 a.m. -- and Michael will be back for another live broadcast on Oct. 17th.

Production Support Request From Local Producer...

Producers and help needed to video a public forum at the Higher Education Center October 8 evening where local candidates for county commissioner and state senate will discuss their perspectives on global warming and their intended office in the Rogue Valley.  Ideally, I'd like a three camera shoot plus some lights, so as many as three people, but less would work.   We intend to put the resulting video on RVTV and use it in SOCAN (Southern Oregon Climate Action Now) and Rogue Climate libraries.  Please contact Brad Carrier, (RVTV Producer 0004) at (541) 482-3432 or e-mail carrierbrad@gmail.com to help out.

Editor's note: You're welcome to put announcements like these in the newsletter too for any non-commercial video production intended for the RVTV audience -- just e-mail your 3-4 sentence statement, with contact info, to Charles at douglasc@sou.edu.

A REMINDER ON PROGRAMMING SUBMISSION HOURS

Due to staffing issues at the DMC, we are asking producers to submit their field productions, promos and any other programs to Brandon or Charles during these particular hours:

Tuesdays 3:30-5:30pm
Wednesdays 3:30-6:30pm
Fridays 5-8pm
Saturdays 9am-6pm

This also applies to “walk-in consultations” – while we want to be open to inquires at all hours, the realities of limited staffing hours and increased operational demands make this a regrettable, but necessary request. If at all possible, make it a habit to call or preferably e-mail in advance to make an appointment. This will hopefully make for more efficient and successful outcomes for all concerned.

Please note that these program submission hours do not apply to any special appointments you’ve set up with RVTV staff – another incentive for pre-planned meetings – and your reservations to use the Public Access Edit Lab can be accomplished during any time of day that the lights are on at the DMC.

SUBMIT PROGRAMS DIGITALLY!

Save money save the environment! Quit using plastic DVDs and get a re-usable thumbdrive to give us your program. You won’t have to pay for submitting local programs (a charge still applied on imports) and we’ll off-load your programs while you wait. It’s good for the Earth and good for your pocketbook, as well as saving RVTV staff a significant amount of time spent ripping DVDs.

SD CARDS & DV TAPES NOTICE

Due to budgetary issues (which are beyond our immediate control), RVTV must announce with immediate effect that we will not supply either SD cards for our Panasonic HD cameras or mini-DV tapes for our Canon Vixia HD cameras & our other standard definition cameras.

SD Cards are available at the SOU Bookstore as well as at many reputable vendors in local storefronts as well as at Internet-based outlets. Tapes are not available at the Bookstore but are also available at a variety of brick-and-mortar and virtual stores.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes…but on the bright side, this means you can retain your own recording media for future use!
