It's That Time...

We've come around to that time of the quarter when all good Studio Certified Producers must come to the aid of their station!

You are invited to our Quarterly Studio Producers Meeting on Wednesday, March 4th starting at 7 p.m. sharp here at the Digital Media Center.

This meeting is where producers will get some critical updates on the latest developments here in RVTV -- including stuff that's either too complex or too sensitive to put in the newsletter.

More to the point, this meeting is where we divvy out the Studio Production Timeslot schedule for Spring Quarter 2015 -- through April, May and June. Remember, only Studio Certified Producers are eligible to bid for production timeslots. There is no proxy bidding or "phoning it in" -- you must be present to win, and you must be producing or co-producing the shows created during your production timeslots. It should also go without saying that your studio time is for production of non-commercial shows which are "first run" on RVTV Voices.

Speaking of winning: The Awesome Award winner for the last three months will be honored! This award goes to the producer putting in the most time to help out others' in-studio shows. It can't be emphasized enough -- Producers Helping Producers is how RVTV Public Access survives, and the prioritized bidding of the Awesome Award winner, and the four next runners-up present, is a reflection of this reality.

We also have a special honor to bestow for one particular ground-breaking producer...but you'll just have to be present to find out!

Do you want to learn more about making high-quality television programs?

The obvious answer for many readers is 'yes' and RVTV staff have heard as much over the last couple of years, especially given the extensive upgrades to the Digital Media Center making high definition production the new standard with the accompanying Canon XF305 cameras, TriCaster 855 and the like.

We have developed a comprehensive curriculum to lend you the kind of expertise from television professionals which costs far more time and resources for college-enrolled Video Production students to gather, at a fraction of the cost -- but as our resources are very limited with only three full-time staff running a four-channel cable & streaming television network serving several local governments and a myriad of clients, we have to budget our tight schedule accordingly.

As such, we're announcing an 'Open Enrollment' period for our Intermediate Directing pair of workshops (Production Design & Production Process) -- the pre-requisite for our Advanced Workshops in particular areas of proficiency.

We will roll out a schedule for the next dates we offer Intermediate Directing (usually a pair of Thursday evenings from 6-8pm) -- but ONLY when we have three confirmed sign-ups with secured seats in the class. The sooner we have producers signed up, the sooner we can make this happen.

For the dozen or so RVTV Producers who have completed Intermediate Directing -- as well as for those of you who Open Enroll to make the next offering happen -- we'd like to present to you this suite of Advanced Studio Workshops:

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: ON-SET NETWORKING

  • A look behind that TriCaster rack and get a hands-on demonstration of how all the studio equipment is hooked together.
  • Demonstration the use of and best practices advice for the "Aux Out" function of the TriCaster to feed any available video sources to the stand-up widescreen Samsung display.
  • A how-to walk-through with the Matrox scan converter system works to translate the feed from our studio-dedicated Mac ProBook laptop to the TriCaster system and how these sets of devices can be tied together so you can run your own Powerpoint set-up, display websites and even play streaming or recorded media from the host's chair.
  • Exploration of the benefits and pitfalls of using Skype and other video conferencing software, with an emphasis on maximizing quality and coaching your remote talent.
NOTICE: As previously announced in this newsletter, and as spelled out in the Community Access Policy, "Use of the On-Set Display, the studio laptop, the scan convertor and associated equipment is only permitted under the direction of a producer who has completed the Advanced Workshop entitled 'On-Set Networking.'"

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: GREEN SCREEN FUNDAMENTALS

  • Dive in to the principles of compositing video layers.
  • Study examples of why you would matte objects into a set, versus using a purely digitally projected one.
  • Learn the tricks of separating lighting of your talent/studio space and the green screen
  • How to use the tolerance, smoothness and color sampling tools to fine-tune your image.
  • Exploration of the virtual set templates available and advice on set-up.
  • Integration of the Proc Amp and Crop tools for specialized virtual sets.
NOTICE: As previously announced in this newsletter, and as spelled out in the Community Access Policy, "Use of the Green Screen & Virtual set capabilities is only permitted under the direction of a producer who has completed the Advanced Workshop entitled 'Green Screen Fundamentals.'"

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: ANATOMY OF LIGHTING

  • Look at the types of studio lights and their distinct uses.
  • Learn how the lighting appliances are put together and why.
  • Study the principles of focusing, angle and intensity.
  • Exploration of the use of color for mood, effect and color correction.
  • What a gobo is and how the textures affect composition.
  • How to make humans look human!
  • Demonstration of set-up and integration of the lighting grid
  • How the lighting panel works and what those 'do not touch' buttons do.

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: AUDIO CONCEPTS

  • Exploration of the types of microphones and when to use them.
  • Look at different studio and field set-ups and what each situation calls for.
  • Tackle the perils and benefits of wireless microphones.
  • Dig into cables, how they should be run (and hid) and THE one and only proper wrapping technique.
  • Learn about the myriad of intimidating knobs on the audio console and what they actually do.
  • Proper mixing of microphones and outside sources to maintain balance and avoid over-modulation.
  • Use of the Hotspot speaker to compliment your studio show.

We welcome your feedback on these offerings as well as suggestions on any areas of study you'd like to see us offer -- and if you intend to enroll, please encourage your friends and colleagues in the Public Access ranks to join alongside with you so that we have sufficient enrollment to make these offerings happen.

Our normal weekly equipment checkout time is on Tuesdays between 3:30-6:30 p.m. Producers are highly encouraged to reserve the equipment they need IN ADVANCE. To do so, please e-mail Charles Douglas at douglasc@sou.edu or call (541) 552-6898. Please turn in equipment during this time and notify us in advance of any time conflicts – do NOT leave equipment at the front desk, the back counter, or with anyone other than Charles, Brandon or Alexander.

THIS WEEK: RVMs First Open Mic For Film!

Our friends at the Rogue Valley Messenger have asked to include the RVTV Public Access community in the following event:
You are invited to "Green Screen! The Messenger's 'Open Mic' For Film" on Thursday, March 5th at 8 p.m. at Paddy Brannan's Irish Pub (23 S. 2nd St., Ashland).
Made a documentary? A comedy sketch? A music video? The Rogue Valley Messenger wants to see it! Bring any non-porn film of 10 minutes or less film you've made on a DVD (or as a Quicktime file on a memory stick) and we'll put it on the big screen for an audience to enjoy with a beer and/or dinner from Paddy Brannan's Irish Pub.


Best film of the evening will win passes to the Ashland International Film Fest!

The 11th Annual Rogue Valley Independent Media Week is coming to community-oriented TVs, radios and print racks near you -- and the DMC is once again a hotbed of activity coordinating these efforts amongst various media outlets and independent-minded educators and supporters. We're thrilled to announce that this year we're joining our efforts with #EMCON -- the student-centered, student-organized Emerging Media Convention going into its second year on the campus of Southern Oregon University.

We're gathering this Saturday to discuss who our Keynote Speaker will be this year and lots more -- join us for these meetings, which are always held here at the Digital Media Center.

In the weeks to come we'll also be lining up a new round of Public Service Announcements from local residents and RVTV Producers on the topic of: "What does Independent Media mean to you?" Please let us know if you'd like to participate.

Spring Cleaning For The RVTV Voices Schedule

It's coming up on that time when your RVTV staff will be doing some spring cleaning of our series line-ups on RVTV Voices, where we're coming up on 17 months of 24/7 scheduling.

We've seen quite a few new local public access producers start their own series in the past couple of years! Thanks to the dramatic increase in programming time, we've been able to accommodate these scheduling requests with both first-run premiere times and some guaranteed replay times on top of that.


While we've done our best to keep the schedule refreshed and remove shows when their producers let us know that they're moving out of town or simply winding up that particular effort, there's definitely some catching-up to do when we have a number of series where no new submissions have been received in months or in a couple of cases over a year!

As a reminder, the Community Access Policy you've read about in past issues of this newsletter provided clear definitions as to what the requirements are to maintain a series on RVTV Voices:

  • E. SERIES STATUS: Establishing a new series status requires the submission of three or more episodes for scheduling in a particular academic quarter (Winter beginning Jan. 1; Spring beginning Apr. 1; Summer beginning July 1; Fall beginning Oct. 1). The status of any series will be reviewed near or at the beginning of each new quarter and on other occasions as determined by RVTV staff.
  • For programs to be labeled a series, the producer must generate THREE NEW EPISODES submitted for scheduling for each 13-week programming season on RVTV Voices. Failure to submit three episodes in a particular season, or the submission of episodes which do not fit the series or are otherwise out of compliance with RVTV policies, will result in the cancellation of series status.

Of course our job at RVTV isn't just to enforce policies, but to try to help producers by giving them the tools they need to make their content come to life. As such, we'll be sending out e-letters to producers who have series which have fallen behind in the next couple of weeks in an attempt to encourage them to catch up. We're willing to be a little flexible if producers can commit to getting their series back up to date by the end of Spring Quarter.

On that point -- if you know a producer who could use a little extra assistance, please offer them that helping hand. We have very limited staff time at the DMC, but we certainly have a wealth of equipment, resources and meeting space that we're happy to make available, especially for Producers Helping Producers.

A REMINDER ON PROGRAMMING SUBMISSION HOURS



Due to staffing issues at the DMC, we are asking producers to submit their field productions, promos and any other programs to Charles or Alex during these particular hours:

Tuesdays 3:30-6:30pm
Wednesdays 3:30-5:30pm
Fridays 4-6pm
Saturdays 9am-6pm


(PLEASE NOTE THE NEW TIMES)


This also applies to “walk-in consultations” – while we want to be open to inquires at all hours, the realities of limited staffing hours and increased operational demands make this a regrettable, but necessary request. If at all possible, make it a habit to call or preferably e-mail in advance to make an appointment. This will make for more efficient and successful outcomes for all concerned.

Please note that these program submission hours do not apply to any special appointments you’ve set up with RVTV staff – another incentive for pre-planned meetings – and your reservations to use the Public Access Edit Lab can be accomplished during any time of day that the lights are on at the DMC.

A Message From Your Public Access Advisory Board

Editor's Note: Your Public Access Advisory Board met on February 12 and asked to share the following letter from PAAB Vice Chair Bob Schropp with the RVTV producer community:

Fellow Producers,

Prof. Erik Palmer (DMC Academic Coordinator) and Joanne Preston (SOU Director of Grants and Contracts) met with the Public Access Advisory Board awhile back to discuss the public access community's role in generating grants and other fundraising. In addition, lest we forget, Charles Douglas added his own very relevant pearls of wisdom throughout the meeting.

I believe that amongst the participating PAAB members, Leslie Wilson, David Bruce, Ralph Bowman and Bob Ayres, the guidance and suggestions put forth by Joanne Preston and Erik Palmer were most beneficial.

PAAB is now tasked to document what equipment, productions and projects are required to generate new revenue streams. We have been presented a huge opportunity to convey to SOU what Public Access needs, why we need it and who can benefit from using it.

For our first baby step, I’m asking you as Producers to put your wish list together, whether it is equipment, software, educational workshops etc. and forward to Charles.

Briefly tell us what how it will immediately benefit Public Access, as well as SOU and DMC respectively. For example, Public Access should invest in the purchase of the software application, Virtual Set Creation, for the TriCaster. Currently, all productions have a limited amount of existing virtual set templates. The Virtual Set Creator would allow producers to create their own virtual sets as well as Public Access being able to offer classes in Virtual Set Creation. In addition, other SOU departments would have access to the application for their own requirements.

Charles mentioned that upgrade to field equipment is the top of his wishlist including 5 new tripods, 5 shotgun mics, bags, cables, etc.

The sky is the limit for ideas here. We now have 2 new friends who are willing to listen to our requests and facilitate the creation of our dreams. This is your chance to put forth all purchase propositions that we might all benefit from.
