A MOMENT FOR GRATITUDE

Pictured: DMC Manager Brandon Givens addresses the SOU Communications Department 2016 Gala in the RVTV Studio (top), and hands awards to Studio Manager Evan Carbone (lower left) and Digital Outreach Assistant Alex Mesadieu (lower right). Photos by Charles Douglas.

Instead of encouraging producers to raise their production values & publicize their programs, or promote our upcoming workshops to help along the same, I thought I'd take a moment to thank some pretty awesome folks who've played essential roles in the transformation of RVTV over the last two to three years.

Though it's a bit more noticeable when I'm taking my usual time off for travel every May, I'm sure most of our active studio producer community has noticed the tireless contributions of many of our Digital Media Center student staff members.

It is no exaggeration to say that we could not do what we do here without their support -- there are only three professional staff keeping an entire television network-plus-university media education center running and there's just too much to do without student staff operating live meetings, running master control, crewing productions and keeping the doors open when one of us needs a break.

Of particular note are the two gentlemen depicted above. Evan has been fixing our lighting grid, keeping the set pieces organized and teaching advanced lighting and more for most of his college career here at SOU -- and that's just on the RVTV side of the house, not to mention his roles on our live event crews and as the leader of our professional productions in studio for local government partners and other clients. Alex helped see us through the two biggest transitions in how our viewers enjoy public access TV in Southern Oregon -- moving from partial to 24/7 scheduling of RVTV Voices, thence moving to High Definition on all of our channels late last year. He's also the student voice on our Public Access Advisory Council and a fellow producer in his own right (Rogue Valley Comedy & The Alex Show).

Both of these folks have helped me behind the scenes in a great many of the innovations we've rolled out to re-birth the public access program here at RVTV. The awards they received from Brandon earlier today are well deserved... and a mere token of the credit they truly deserve.

So often in life, we don't appreciate the people who are a consistently positive presence until its too late. Thankfully, we'll get to enjoy a bit more assistance from these two after they receive their Bachelor's degrees on June 11 (live on RVTV Prime!) as they will be on our student summer crew while mapping out the next steps in their respective careers. So when you see them around the DMC in the next few weeks, please do take the time to say thanks.

- Charles

A REMINDER ON PROGRAMMING SUBMISSION HOURS

Due to limited staffing at the DMC, we are asking producers to submit their field productions, promos and any other programs to Charles or Alex during these particular hours:

Tuesdays 3:30-6:30pm
Fridays 4-6pm
Saturdays 9am-6pm

(PLEASE NOTE THE NEW TIMES)

This also applies to “walk-in consultations” – while we want to be open to inquires at all hours, the realities of limited staffing hours and increased operational demands make this a regrettable, but necessary request. If at all possible, make it a habit to call or preferably e-mail in advance to make an appointment. This will make for more efficient and successful outcomes for all concerned.

Please note that these program submission hours do not apply to any special appointments you’ve set up with RVTV staff – another incentive for pre-planned meetings – and your reservations to use the Public Access Edit Lab can be accomplished during any time of day that the lights are on at the DMC.
