LETTER FROM THE CHAIRS
Alexander Graham Bell quotes, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” This quote speaks volumes to the year behind us and how we have adapted and continue to do so.
I’m proud that so many in our industry have adapted quickly and truly looked forward to the unknown opened doors. That being said, the International Roofing Expo will be hosting their VIRTUAL Expo March 2 – March 4, 2021, followed by their LIVE expo August 10 – August 12, 2021 in Las Vegas (we can’t wait to see your eyes in person in August). Please be sure to register for the March expo to take advantage of the education, expo hall, some fun events, and exhibits with your comrades online until we see you in August.
Additionally, February is Black History Month and I believe that Mr. Bell’s inspiration has had an impact on this forward movement and that it also speaks to us on a historical level as we celebrate. Please remember that we all need to push forward “TOGETHER” with an open mind and perspective regardless of sex, age, religion, race, or ethnicity. This is a time for us to strengthen our bonds.
As you look at tomorrow, the next month, or the next year, I hope you stop and think about the door that is open and the opportunity that lies within.

How did you get involved in the roofing industry?
I was managing a café, when I met the CEO of Naturashield commercial roofing. We shared a similar passion for business and creating opportunities for local communities. In May 2020, when business at the café began to slow due to covid, the CEO asked if I would be interested in doing some administrative work for his company. I was unsure where this opportunity would lead at the time, but I am so glad I took it! It has been eight months already and I am now taking on a sales and marketing position and very excited for the future. Read more...

2021 - What the Education committee is working on!
|
|
The Education Committee would like to talk about resilience. Financial, emotional, technician and professional resilience! The word started to replace other words that had dominated our conversations over the last 11 months. Words like: pandemic, unprecedented, remote, and exhausted to name a few. We know that simply turning the calendar doesn't guarantee that struggles are behind us. Instead we focus on how we will continue, in the face of future challenges and changes with resilience. We are working to create content and materials with this one common thread throughout 2021. Read more...

Summary: A close friendship is one of the most influential and important relationships a human life can contain. Anyone will tell you that! But for all the rosy sentiments surrounding friendship, most people don’t talk much about what it really takes to stay close for the long haul. Read more...

A Wise Man Supporting Women

When you were starting out did you have a mentor, and if so, was it someone you sought out or they found you?
My father and grandfather were my mentors. This happened naturally; working for a family business, you get to see a wide range of day to day challenges, and my goal was to absorb all the information and do my best to help grow the business. I was also fortunate to have another mentor who was a WWII veteran that taught me all the technical installation aspects of roofing. Read more...

NWiR Canada Council

Submitted by Ellen Thorp
We’ve always had Canadian members but are so happy to welcome our roofing sisters from Canada as an official new NWiR Council. In the beginning we will launch Canada as one big Council who will meet remotely for now. Once we are able to gather in person again, we will plan gatherings in cities where we have a concentration of members. Eventually we hope to build up to Councils in all cities where there are women who want to launch a Council there. The leadership launch team has been hard at work soliciting sponsors, recruiting members, and spreading the word about NWiR Canada Council. They have been generously assisted by the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association. Read more...
