Back by popular demand! For those who missed out last year, Bath, ME and Mystic, CT are again on the list, but so is a brand new destination, New Bedford, MA! Visits will offer social gatherings and the opportunity to explore Mystic Seaport, the Maine Maritime Museum, the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the 172 year old whale ship, the Charles W. Morgan, during her voyage to her original home port!

Members who participate and attend by water will receive a commemorative BYY tote bag and a BYY club burgee! At each rendezvous, attendees, including walk-ins, will also have the opportunity to visit with fellow BYY members, as well as BYY staff. Two designated Saturday social gatherings – a morning “coffee” and an evening “docktail” – will serve as bookend events to busy days of independent exploration and discovery in these fascinating locations. BYY Rendezvous @ New Bedford, MA, June 27-29
Participants will literally rendezvous with the Charles W. Morgan as she makes a homecoming voyage to the port she called home for 60 years (1841-1921). The Charles W. Morgan is the world’s last remaining wooden whale ship! This summer, she will embark on an unprecedented voyage to historic ports on the New England Coast; New Bedford is her first port of call. Rendezvous participants will have access to all of the homecoming fanfare and celebratory events surrounding the Charles W. Morgan’s return to the Port of New Bedford. Concerts, programs, regattas, whaleboat races and parades, a whaling history symposium, public ceremonies, and much more are scheduled to take place over a nine day period, and during BYY’s weekend rendezvous. Downtown New Bedford’s historic sites, restaurants, and famed New Bedford Whaling Museum will also beckon sailors ashore, as will a complimentary breakfast, a scheduled tour of the Charles W. Morgan, and an evening “docktail” with fellow BYY members and local BYY staff.

Space is limited to approximately 20 boats. Slip/mooring reservations should be made at Popes Island Marina, which is conveniently situated within sight of the State Pier where the Charles W. Morgan will be docked. To reserve your spot, please call Debbie Yuille at (508) 979-1456. Be sure to mention that you are part of the BYY Rendezvous group. Learn How to Sail Safe

The Storm Trysail Foundation, New York Yacht Club, and SUNY Maritime are running a full-day Safety At Sea seminar at Ft. Schuyler on April 5. This will be a hands-on seminar teaching safety skills including: sailing to and picking up a man overboard, setting storm sails, reefing a main sail, shooting off flares, using a fire extinguisher on burning diesel fuel, drown-proofing while swimming in full foul weather gear, righting a lift raft, damage control, emergency communications, and more.

The course meets the requirements of the Bermuda Race, but more importantly it teaches lessons all sailors can benefit from, even if they only venture as far as across Long Island Sound. You will not fall asleep as a result of information overload. Instead of sitting in a chair watching PowerPoint presentations, you’ll be on a boat, in the pool, fighting a fire, and launching parachute flares. These are activities you don’t want to be doing for your first time when lives are at risk.

The $250 tuition fee covers a continental breakfast, lunch, and a cocktail party at the end of the day. To register online, go to www.stormtrysailfoundation.org. SUNY Maritime is easy to get to from anywhere in the tri-state area since it is just off the highway at the foot of the Throggs Neck Bridge in the Bronx.
