Do good December!
I've taken this title from Action for Happiness December calendar. If you haven't yet downloaded one please click on their website and do it! They're so helpful for reminding us to stick to our good intentions and go in the direction of joy and happiness. You can save the calendars on to your phone or print them out, or even better through the power of technology get the little reminders to populate your electronic (computer or smart phone) calendar so you have a message on your personal calendar every day.

Since I led the Action for Happiness course in the summer I've been acutely aware of the need to 'take action for happiness'.  So I tell people if you want to be happy, to be peaceful, to have friends, to have love in your life - you need to do something. It's not enough to want it or dream about it, we need to take some positive action. Even baby steps in the right direction can make a big difference.

Joining a group or class is one form of positive action that is guaranteed to open up new possibilities for you. You will learn something new and you will meet some new and potentially interesting people.  This is one of my favourite actions to take.  I love learning and am always interested in people in all their various life stages and stories.

So while I'm clearly advocating taking action I also want to strongly suggest non-action too! At this time of year things can get really busy as we navigate the Christmas market, Christmas shopping, Christmas do's and family gatherings! It can seem a bit overwhelming and exhausting and we can feel empty and cheerless instead of how we're 'meant' to feel at this time of year.  

The answer to this overwhelm and overconsumption is right there in nature - hibernate. This time of year is perfect for stopping, calming, resting and healing. Taking time out. Cosy nights in and (even for a while) switching off from all electronic devices. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the dark nights. Savour silence... and hot chocolate and festive treats.

It's all about that elusive balance isn't it? Back to my original point - sometimes we have to take action to make that happen. So why not decide to take time out and take action so that you cultivate peace and quiet in your heart and mind?

For me it's about 'no more drama'. Don't get sucked in. Be aware of all the conflicting and competing demands on you and ensure that you schedule time for rest and true relaxation. Watching TV can be enjoyable but it's not truly deep relaxation as the brain is being stimulated. This will benefit our bodies and minds and enable us to really enjoy and savour the fruits of this special time of year!

I have two Christmas mindful self-compassion workshops that will help you do just that :) 
  1. Sunday morning 9 December in Maitri studio 
  2. Sunday afternoon 16 December in Namaste 
In both workshops there will be deep relaxation, sharing and chocolate meditation. Give yourself (and your friends!) the gift of Christmas peace! Christmas jumpers are most welcome - we need an excuse to get our wear out of them right?! :) 

On Thursday 13 December in Namaste I have my annual Christmas charity event. This year it's in aid of Action Cancer.  It’s preceded by a Chinese in Macau (downstairs from Namaste). It's a lovely chance to catch up. If you are interested in the Chinese meal you do need to let me know so I can book the correct numbers. You can just turn up for the charity class (suggested donation £10). This class is only an hour but it's lots of fun and yes it will also have chocolate meditation! Everyone and their Christmas jumpers (or not!) welcome.

I usually give you an update on what I've been up to in these newsletters and I have to admit it's been quite busy! I've been teaching classes or workshops for Action on Hearing Loss, Hastings Hotel staff, managers in TESCO and giving talks for the She Said Club and NASUWT as well as teaching my evening classes and weekend workshops!

To counteract the busyness I went for a week's retreat in my happy place, Plum Village. My whole career in mindfulness has been inspired by this place and I haven't missed visiting a single year in the last 14 years! I also think its important to practice what I preach about stopping, calming, resting and healing. Mind you, catching up on emails and housework upon return means it's not always easy and I have to be more organised.

I'm looking forward to having a few weeks downtime over Christmas and New Year and seeing my sister Jenny, niece Daisy and nephew Ollie who will be home for Christmas from Australia. It will be the first time I've seen them in two years! #cantwait

My New Year 8-week courses (MBSR & MSC) will start on 22 and 23 January 2019. These courses are available to book now and early bird ends on 5 January. Please send an email for application form and more details: mindfulmind@outlook.com

There's also two New Year, New Me workshops, one in Maitri on Sunday morning 20 January and one on Sunday afternoon in Namaste on 10 January. These two hours can be really powerful and make a big difference to how you start the new year. And of course my 6-week Namaste Mindfulness Practice class will be back for its 11th year on 10 January.

And if you really want to invest in the 2019 then you must come to my annual 'envisioning retreat'. I've been offering this retreat for the past five years and it's wonderfully nourishing, helpful and fun! We enjoy making vision boards, we burn our intentions on the fire, we do mindful coastal walks and we share about our hopes for the future. Check it out.

Book of the Month: The Milkman by Anna Burns This is the winner of the Man Booker Prize 2018. I haven't actually read it yet but I've bought it because Anna is a local woman done good and we gotta support our local authors just like our local businesses - right? :) Let me know what you think if you have read it.

6-week Namaste Mindfulness practice class

This 6-week mindfulness practice class sells out every time so it is necessary to book in advance. Drop-in is not available. The class is suitable for total newbies and those of you who already know how to practice but appreciate the support of group practice (pro tip: it's always easier in a group). xx

Charity Meditation night!
Thursday 13 December 8.15-9.15pm

I LOVE this wee night! It's perfect to get us all into the Christmas spirit - especially as its for a great cause in Action Cancer.

We will have sitting, walking and chocolate meditation - peace and harmony will be by-products! :) 

It's preceded by meal in the Chinese below Namaste, Macau. Let me know if you want to attend this. You can just turn up for the meditation class. Suggested donation is £10.  Christmas jumpers are encouraged but not necessary. :) 
8-week course Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)

This course is literally life changing. I do recommend some prior experience for this one, i.e you've completed a course like my MBSR or you have previously done some personal development work. Special! Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Workshops at Maitri available to book up to January 2019!

This winter it's all about special themed workshops to give us an extra boost! Sunday 9 December is a Christmas special including deep relaxation and chocolate meditation. Christmas jumper wearing is encouraged! We always have fun at these workshops which are a mixture of new first-timers and those who come nearly every month!  It's only two hours on a Sunday morning but people have told me the effect lasts for the whole month!
