New Community Conservation Project Manager for 2016
The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), is continuing its execution of the Community Conservation Project in 2016.
Linda Warren, a graduate of Brock University’s Faculties of Biology and Geography, and Niagara College’s Ecosystem Restoration Graduate Certificate program, was recently hired as Community Conservation Project Manager.  While residing and working in the Long Point area she has fostered a passion for local wildlife, ecosystems and environmental projects; and is excited be joining this initiative.  Linda will continue Leigh-Anne Bower’s progress by wrapping up a series of workshops focusing on cultural and ecosystem stressors in the Long Point area, and how to mitigate their negative influences through collaborative work between local landowners, government agencies, academic institutions and non-government organizations.  Other projects will include continuing to compile documents for the digital library, hosting community conservation conferences, and working with local groups and organizations on conservation projects.

The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation would like to wish Leigh-Anne Bower, previous Project Manager, the best of luck in her new role with Long Point Region Conservation Authority, and looks forward to continuing collaboration with her and LPRCA on future projects.

The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation is grateful to all of our partners who continue to support and contribute to this project. Partners include Bird Studies Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Long Point Waterfowlers Association, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ontario Parks, and the University of Waterloo, among others. We look forward to the community’s continued support and collaboration at the upcoming workshops in 2016.

Reaching forty kilometres into Lake Erie, Long Point in Ontario Canada is the world’s longest freshwater sand spit.  How the Point’s endless beaches endure as a natural oasis, here in Canada’s most densely populated region, is a feat that involves more than just your typical environmentalists. This is a story of hunters, farmers, foresters, birders, biologists, and just about everyone else in the Long Point Biosphere Reserve – who have learned from conservation pioneers how to cultivate biodiversity, culture, and an economy, on a foundation of sand.
