Chinese New Year & Authenticity
Are you being true to yourself?
Hi <<First Name>>
It’s definitely worth getting up early these days! There's so many planets visible in the early morning sky - see Skywatching in the right-hand column for details :-)
This New Moon in Aquarius brings in the Chinese New Year in the very early morning of Tues 9 Feb (Qld time). Like many traditional cultures, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar, and this New Moon marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Monkey.
The New Moon in Aquarius signifies a renewed focus on authenticity – are you being true to yourself? Do you feel free to be yourself? If not, what is stopping you? Aquarius is a sign associated with freedom and authenticity, at both the individual and collective level. It is strongly non-conformist, needing to be different and unique, free of society’s expectations, a natural rebel. It is also focused on social responsibility, connection at the level of mass consciousness and global humanitarian concerns.
Aquarius is an air sign, loving to debate ideas, the more original, inventive and zany the better. Aquarians are very sociable and tend to be known as the party animals of the zodiac ☺
Wherever you have Aquarius in your chart is the area of life that will be most strongly affected by this New Moon – for example, if this New Moon falls in your 10th house, this signifies the beginning of a new cycle in your career or professional life.
If your birthday falls close to this date (within a day either side), this is the beginning of a significant new cycle in your life, in terms of your sense of identity and purpose in the world.
If you have any planets or chart points at 19 degrees Aquarius, this will be the beginning of a new cycle with regard to whatever quality is associated with that planet – for example, relationships if you have Venus at this degree.
The New Moon is exact at 00.38am Queensland time, just after midnight in the very early morning of Tues 9 Feb - effectively the night of Mon 8 Feb. Remember to put out your New Moon intentions within 24 hours.
Valentine’s Day 14 Feb is likely to go smoothly as the lovers Venus & Mars are in compatible signs, Venus in the Earth sign of Capricorn and Mars in the Water sign of Scorpio, both relatively quiet and introverted signs. Things are about to shift dramatically though for Venus, as she moves out of serious and committed Capricorn a few days later on 17 Feb, into freedom-loving Aquarius where she wants space in relationships, stimulating conversation and the freedom to be true to herself. Clashes are more likely now between the lovers, as both tend to be fixed in their ways and not ready to back down. Mars is more likely to come out on top in any disagreements as Scorpio has a way of being able to subtly influence outcomes. Mars moves into Sagittarius on Sun 6 March and from then on there’ll be an easier flow of energy between the lovers.
A heads-up that Mars will be retro from mid-April to the end of June, a period typically of considerable frustration as we feel that we are getting nowhere fast. Projects tend to get stalled and delayed, and there’s often a feeling akin to wading through treacle. This only comes round once every two years, so it’s not an energy we are so accustomed to (compared to Mercury retro which is every 3 months). On Thurs 18 Feb we enter the “retrograde shadow”, the lead-up to the retrograde period, and from then on we may start to feel some of the frustrating retro energy as Mars slows down, approaching the point at which it turns and goes retrograde on Sun 17 April. Patience is the virtue that will get tested for the next 6 months, till we are out of the retro shadow on the other side, on 22 Aug. The most positive use of this energy is to stay calm and welcome the slower pace, using it to revise and improve on your original plans.
The Full Moon falls in Virgo at 4.20am AEST on the morning of Tues 23 Feb – so the night to celebrate the Full Moon will be the previous evening Mon 22 Feb. The Full Moon in Virgo brings into focus our need for order and purity - a need that is especially strong at the collective level this year with Jupiter and the North Node both in Virgo. (For more on the implications of this, get the audio & pdf of my Astrology of 2016 talk). The examples I gave in my talk were of the increasing demand for organic food, and the ingenious efforts to clean up the oceans - and things may come to something of a head with this Full Moon. Virgo is a very analytical sign, and as an Earth sign it is analytical in a practical way, trying to improve situations (and even people!) in its search for perfection. The Full Moon seeks a balance between the microcosmic attention to detail of Virgo and the macrocosmic holistic vision of Pisces. Check your birth chart to see which house is under the spotlight at 3 degrees Virgo.
Looking ahead to next lunar month …
The eclipse season is here again with the next New Moon. The New Moon in Pisces is a Total Solar Eclipse falling on Wed 9 March at 11.54am AEST at 18 degrees Pisces. Eclipses demand respect, so be extra careful in the couple of weeks leading up to this and don’t take any unnecessary risks!
