Steve Goodman (aka Kode9), the founder and label boss of renowned electronic label Hyperdub, will receive the Innovator Award at the AIM Independent Music Awards on 2nd September 2014. A new award category for 2014, the Innovator Award celebrates the achievements of an artist, label or business person pushing the boundaries of independent music.

The first recipient of the award counts himself as all three. Steve Goodman, aka DJ and producer Kode9, founded the London based label in 2004 from the original webzine launched in 2001. Starting as it meant to go on, the label’s first release was his own odd, beatless version of Prince’s ‘Sign o’ the times’ featuring MC/Poet Spaceape, a dark spine-chilling interpretation that surfaced when dubstep was but a glint in UK garage’s eye.
The mutating sound of Hyperdub has continued at an impressive pace. Since 2009's unifying '5 years of Hyperdub', the label started to spread out its net  bringing together disparate sounds within the collective bracket of electronic music and giving them the wider recognition they deserve. From the hazy shape shifting pop of Hype Williams, Cooly G's gritty south london soul, DVA's rhythmic colourful inventions, plus newer signings outside the UK, such as Jessy Lanza's icy R'n'B, Fatima Al Qadiri's artful sinogrime, Fhloston Paradigm's sci-fi soul and the influential music of the late DJ Rashad, the music of Hyperdub sends ripples throughout the musical spectrum. In 10 years as a label, Hyperdub has managed to establish and uphold a reputation for consistently on-point and challenging releases that has seen it become one of the most vital UK independent labels.

Celebrating their 10th Anniversary this year, Hyperdub stand proud as a risk-taking, innovative force in the independent music community, providing music fans with a decade of truly forward-thinking music, and there's much more to come.

Originally from Glasgow but based in South London since 2000, Kode9’s own journey is an impressive read. Two albums with vocalist collaborator Spaceape, ‘Memories of Future’ (2006) and ‘Black Sun’ (2010), three DJ mix compilations, tracks released on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label, remixes for Lee Scratch Perry (On U Sound), Junior Boys (Domino), Battles (Warp), and Dabrye ft. Doom (Ghostly) plus five years as the weekly host on Rince FM’s ‘FWD’ show before moving up to his own Hyperdub monthly show, co-hosted with Scratcha DVA. Not to mention the global festival appearances and club night slots.

With his new EP due this year alongside the 10th Anniversary celebrations which will see the differing strands of the label split across four compilations, the Innovator Award could not have arrived at a better time. Speaking of the news, Kode9 commented, “You can only do so much on your own, so really this award is for all the artists I work with and the team that distribute and promote our music behind the scenes. Thanks and congratulations to them.”
