It was great to see so many of you at Tuesday's FoSN meeting! We value your time and try to make the meetings as productive as possible. In just 50 minutes, we accomplished a lot, including getting brief overviews of each of the FoSN committees, hearing an update from our treasurer and participating in a Q&A with Principal Netterstrom.

Dear Families, 

Forgive me if you've heard this story before... 

At the end of our first whirlwind year at Skinner North, my husband and I sheepishly realized that the school had never asked us for anything in return for our child's world-class education. No $25,000 tuition bill. No über-aggressive appeals for a capital campaign. 

To balance the imaginary scales a bit, Jon and I started volunteering and participating in the school's activities, committees and fundraisers. With both of us working full-time in the far-off suburbs, it was challenging, but smart phones made a lot possible!

Three years later, our family STILL receives more than we give at Skinner North! The teachers, administration and parents we work with are so caring, creative and talented, that it's been a true pleasure to be involved. Our family has made a lot of friends here. And any event with the students--from the book fair to the Walk-A-Thon to service projects--gives us such a great feeling and reminds us why we're all here. 

Jon and I have resigned ourselves to the idea that we can never "repay" Skinner North for what it has done for our family. But, by being involved in the ways we are able, perhaps we can "pay it forward" to future students and their families.

I hope you and your family are able to find a way to share your time, talents and connections with our community and help us build a school for future generations. Just a little bit of time goes a long way! Please consider becoming a room parent, join a committee, sign up for the book fair, clip Box Tops and donate when you can.

FoSN Bylaws
Friends of Skinner North (“FoSN”) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. As a tax-exempt organization, FoSN must have bylaws that set forth the practices and procedures that govern the conduct of FoSN’s business. 

As FoSN matures, it will need to periodically review, revise, and amend its bylaws. This summer, a volunteer task force drafted revisions to the FoSN bylaws, incorporating feedback from our members and the FoSN Executive Committee.

The proposed FoSN Bylaws have been posted on FoSN’s website under the “About Us” tab. The FoSN Executive Committee invites all FoSN members to provide feedback on the proposed FoSN Bylaws. All comments and questions about the proposed bylaws should be sent no later than Wednesday, October 1, 2014 to Eleni Vasilopoulos, the FoSN Secretary, at Based on the feedback received, changes may be made to the proposed FoSN Bylaws. A final draft of the proposed FoSN Bylaws will be posted on FoSN’s website by Friday, October 3, 2014.

Members of FoSN will vote on the proposed FoSN bylaws at the November 4, 2014 meeting. To meet the requirements of the current bylaws, FoSN membership will receive written notice at the October 7, 2014 FoSN meeting. Discussion regarding the proposed bylaws may be conducted at the October 7 and/or November 4 meeting. 
Hear ye! Hear ye! Starting TODAY, you and your children can enter Sir Readalot's Castle at Skinner North and purchase some wonderful books!

Our Scholastic book fair is opening a day early-- TODAY! The fair will be open during our traditional drop-off and pick-up times: 8:00 and 9:00 am and then again between 3:00 and 4:00 pm! They accept cash, check and credit cards.

Students will visit our Scholastic book fair during their library periods, looking at books and purchasing some, if desired. You can send along money with them for purchases or visit the fair during the following times:

Monday, Sept. 15 8:00am-9:00am and 3:00pm-4:00pm
Tuesday, Sept. 16 8:00am-4:00pm
Wed., Sept. 17 8:00am-9:00pm and 3:00pm-4:00pm
Thurs., Sept. 18 8:00am-4:00pm
Friday, Sept. 19 8:00am-4:00pm

If you’re all booked up during Book Fair week, be sure to visit the Book Fair online from Sept 10 – Sept 26.

We are in need of volunteers to help during the Fair and then to help break down the Fair on September 19 after school. If you are interested please contact Eleni at or sign up here.

Earlier this week, the LSC unanimously voted to offer our principal a much-deserved, four-year contract! Under Ethan's visionary and thoughtful leadership, Skinner North has thrived.

Get your Skinner North spirit wear, now available online

The fall sports informational meeting will be Monday, September 15 in the cafeteria from 4:15-5:15pm. Here you will pick up all forms and information needed for Cross Country or Boys Soccer. Please see the new Skinner North Sports Blog if you cannot make the meeting for information on how to sign up your athlete. 


Art and Scraps
We are still looking for newspaper, toilet/paper towel rolls or soda cans! Bring them to school and have them transformed into pieces of art by your very own Skinner student. 

We set up labeled containers in the parent room, where you can Stop & Drop your newspapers/magazines, paper rolls and soda cans. 
As we don’t have much space in the art room or the parent room, we will take a break from collecting once the bins are full and will make sure to notify you early enough about new scraps for art! 
Thank you for your scraps and helping us create an opportunity when sustainability and creativity come together for the betterment of our communities and our planet.

The Arts Committee needs YOU!

We have some big projects this year and we need your help. Do you love the arts, are involved in the Arts or are interested in an easy way to get to know other parents?

Are you really good with scissors and love to cut out shapes with great precision or maybe speed? Great ideas need execution and we support our Art and Music teacher with various activities and events at Skinner North. 

Come to our meeting on Wednesday, September 17 at 8:30am in the parent room and see whether this is the committee for you.

 2014 Walk-A-Thon
Save the date:  Friday, October 17, 2014 – parents are welcome to come see their little ones participate and cheer them on.

What is a Walk-a-Thon?  Our annual Walk-a-Thon is a fun and fit activity for kindergartners through seventh-graders, with all children reaching for their personal best walking distance. It’s a great opportunity to educate our Skinner North stars about physical fitness, while supporting a good cause for their school community.   The Walkathon is also a fundraiser. Each year, our students challenge themselves and their supporters to raise significant funds for important school needs. 

Walk-A-thon going green this year!  All forms for the Walk-A-Thon will be available on this year (Family Sponsorship Form, Business Sponsorship Form, Student Pledge Form and a General Packet explaining the Walk-A-Thon).  A few hard copies will be available in the school office. 

New This Year! Besides the paper Pledge Form, families will have the option to send a general school Pledge Link to forward to friends and family to collect donations. Families can also choose to create a Pledge Page for their child, with their own special link, to send to friends and family.

Shop on Amazon via the Amazon Affiliates link and the school receives 5% - 15% cash back on all purchases! Click on the icon to the left of the Amazon Affiliate Program paragraph. The more purchases made on Amazon via the Affiliates link the higher the % we receive. Currently we are at 7% cash back on all purchases. This is different from the Amazon Smile program, where the school receives 0.5% of all purchases. 

Box Tops
Save those Box Tops and Labels for Education – the Fundraising Team is collecting Box Tops and Labels for Education – you can deliver them to school via your child’s backpack (each classroom has a collection box) or drop them off in the main collections boxes located just inside the school’s main doors. Put them in an envelope or Ziploc before inserting it into the collection box. Click this link to win bonus Box Tops for our school.

Skinner North Family & Friends Day at Bow and Stern - Saturday, October 4 
Take your friends and family to brunch at Bow & Stern Oyster Bar and raise money for Friends of Skinner North at the same time. Bow & Stern is located at 1371 W. Chicago Avenue. Kids can enjoy homemade donuts with dipping sauces as well as oreo pancakes!! There are plenty of choices for adults as well.   

Skinner North families & friends can make reservations on their
website or call 312-988-0644. Please mention that you are with Skinner North both when making the reservation and when they come in to dine. Bow & Stern will donate 15% of the total Skinner North sales back to FOSN to anyone who mentions Skinner North - so please share with your friends. Families do not need reservations but they are recommended so that Bow & Stern can be prepared for us!



Social Committee Meeting
The Social Committee will hold its first meeting on September 19 at 8:30am. We will be discussing parent/teacher coffees (October 20-24), Harvest Festival (November 21) and Spirit Week (December 15-19)!

We are looking for enthusiastic people to dedicate ANY amount of time, whether you'd like to co-chair an event, or spend an hour at a welcome table! We need YOU! Contact Mia Beckman with any questions:
