7|29|2022 God still uses prophets today.

<<First Name>>
“Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy…the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. - 1 Corinthians 14:1,3

What transformed the world after Christ’s resurrection wasn’t the outstanding leadership in the early church.  Nor was it the church councils, food distribution programs, or even the dynamic preaching of the Apostles.  What transformed the disciples, their ministry, and the world was the Spirit of God.  That same Spirit is at work in your life and our world today.

In his first letter to the believers in Corinth, the Apostle Paul encourages the church to eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit.  Earlier (1 Corinthians 12) Paul outlines what we refer to as the spiritual gifts - gifts that come through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to build up the church.  But in chapter 14, Paul highlights one gift in particular - the gift of prophecy.

God didn’t just use prophets in the Old Testament and in the early church, God still uses prophets today. God doesn’t necessarily call prophets to stand on the street corners proclaiming the end is near, but to build up His children, His Church, His Kingdom through words of encouragement, exhortation and comfort.  God is looking for those willing to allow the Holy Spirit to speak through them, proclaiming God’s word to the church.  But we will never hear God speak when we silence the voice God gives.

The early church exploded with growth because they were attuned to the work God was doing.  The Holy Spirit flowed in the lives of those early believers, in their ministry, and in their communities.  But today the church in the US doesn’t look nearly as vibrant or full of life.  Is it possible the reason we don’t hear God speak through prophets today is because we silence the voice God gives?  Do we allow God to speak words of encouragement through us?  Are we calling other believers into action?  Do we have a word of comfort to offer others when things don’t go as hoped for?  Or are we quick to quiet our inner voice and jump to judgments and condemnation.

God still uses prophets today.  We can eagerly desire the gift of prophecy by tuning in to the work the Holy Spirit is doing in our midst and by sharing a word of encouragement, exhortation and comfort to build up the church.  Join us this week as we dive into what it might look like for God to use prophets in our church today.

In Christ’s Service,
