Congratulations to the Redlands Adult Literacy Program
At Redlands' Northside Impact Committee's annual recognition & scholarship event on October 20th, the Redlands Adult Literacy Program was presented with the group's Educational Award. Congressman Pete Aguilar, Assembly member Eloise Reyes, and San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos also honored the program's service to the community with certificates.

The literacy program changes lives by helping adults gain the reading and writing skills to get better jobs, help children in school, or advance their own education. To date, over 400 adults have received help with their reading and writing. Currently, there are more than 100 tutor-learner teams working together.

Adult Literacy Coordinator Diane Shimota noted, "It is an honor to receive the 2018 Education Award in recognition of the hard work of the many volunteer tutors and adult learners in the Redlands Adult Literacy Program. We hope that everyone will help us in our effort to make education available to all in Redlands, whatever their age."

The following are two ways you can support the adult literacy program's effort: if you are aware of someone who would benefit from adult literacy, please encourage them to call or stop by the library. And if you would like to volunteer, please attend the next tutor orientation on January 22, 2019 at 6:00 pm. To reach the literacy desk at the library, please call 909.798.7565, ext. 4138 or email literacy@akspl.org

National Friends of the Library Week
Many thanks to those who joined us at our National Friends of the Library Week events, including the Secrets of the Library evening, Blockbuster Bag Sale, and fundraisers at Panera and Sugarbee Café & Bake Shop.

We kicked off the week with the Secrets of the Library Event, a fun evening of friendly spooks, yummy food, and fellowship. Library Director Don McCue entertained attendees with tales of ghost sightings at the library, a few dark episodes in Redlands, and a notorious former citizen. In keeping with the Halloween theme, Director McCue also shared a special item from the library’s archives: a headstone! We thank Director McCue for sharing his time and vast knowledge of Smiley Library and Redlands history with us.

We are also deeply grateful to Panera and Sugarbee Café & Bake Shop for hosting fundraisers to support the Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library.
