Volunteer Appreciation
If you're at the library regularly, this month's featured volunteer, Robert Shockley, probably looks familiar. He volunteers Monday through Friday! We are deeply grateful for Robert's many contributions to the Friends' efforts to raise funds for the library. He is a very valuable part of our auction and bookstore crew but is often in the background and unheralded.

Robert collects all of the donations that come through the front door, places them on carts for the library staff to sort, and then moves the carts to the basement for the auction team and the bookstore volunteers to process.

Each Tuesday, he moves the sorted carts to the library lobby and places them on the tables, matching the items with the bid slips.  He calls out the closing time for the auction and has come to know many of our regular clients on a first name basis.  He provides much of the muscle for moving the carts downstairs and upstairs, even assisting with our special sales.

In addition to all Robert does at the library, he also volunteers daily at Joselyn Senior Center for the Meals on Wheels Program. Rather than having a regular route, he is the daily sub when a regular deliverer is absent so he is always on "stand-by".

Thank you, Robert, for giving your time so generously to support the Friends and the Redlands community as a whole.
Did you know that approximately 20% of adults in the United States have difficulty reading job postings, their children's homework, medical information, voting materials, and other written materials crucial to functioning in our society?

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program, based at the library, is working to change that statistic by providing free and confidential tutoring in reading and writing to help learners in our community reach their literacy goals.

Currently, over 100 teams of learners and volunteer tutors are working together. Do you have 1.5 hours to give each week to meet with a learner?

The next volunteer orientation session is on April 21st at 6:00 PM in the library's assembly room.

Please call
909.798.7565, ext. 4138, or email literacy@akspl.org to sign up for the orientation or if you have any questions. The Adult Literacy Team looks forward to hearing
from you!
