July 2019 Newsletter
The library is hosting a summer reading program for adults! Between June 11 and July 30, staff will hand out review forms when patrons check out their books. Simply give each book 1-5 stars and jot down a brief review. Each review form will be entered into a drawing to win gift certificates and prizes from local businesses including Augie’s Coffee Roasters, à la Minute Ice Cream, Gerrards Market, Carolyn’s Café, Bricks & Birch, Saverino’s Italian Deli, Sugarbee Café & Bake Shop, Corner Bakery, Martha Green’s Eating Room, Gourmet Pizza Shoppe, and Phoenicia Greek & Lebanese Cuisine.
The Friends are very proud to share that board member Alice Moore was named a Redlands Hero at the annual State of the Community luncheon on June 21st.

Alice has long been our hero, serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for our used bookstore on the lower level of the library. You likely recognize her if you shop on Saturdays... Alice is there every week! She also helps at special sales, including being Santa's cheerful elf at our annual holiday sale in December.

Alice was also recognized for her service at the local animal shelter and with the AAUW coordinating Thanksgiving Outreach in San Bernardino.

Congratulations, Alice!

On June 15th, 2019, 135 adult learners, their tutors, their families, and members of the community gathered at the Contemporary Club for the Celebration of Authors, an event that honors the original work of adult learners from the Redlands Adult Literacy Program.

At the celebration, the authors received copies of Our Stories, A Collection of Writings, Volume 2, the second anthology of adult learner writings. Diane Shimota, the adult literacy coordinator, shared that the anthology “provides an opportunity for adult learners to write stories from their hearts, choosing just the right words to express themselves, and then to share those stories with the broader community.”

Over 40 adult learners and three tutors contributed works for the anthology. The works focused on the learners’ inspirations, journeys to literacy, personal reflections, family and friends, memories and adventures and reflections about books the learners had read.

Copies of the 2018 and 2019 anthologies are available for checkout at A. K. Smiley Public Library. Please take a moment and read about the fascinating lives of adult learners.

The Redlands Adult Literacy Program relies on its wonderful volunteer tutors. The next volunteer tutor orientation is September 30, 2019, at 6 pm at the A.K. Smiley Public Library.

If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please contact the Redlands Adult Literacy Program at (909)798-7565 ext. 4138 or email If you know of someone who needs help in reading and writing, please encourage them to take the first step in changing their lives by contacting the Redlands Adult Literacy Program.

Visit our pop-up book sale at the Redlands Bowl on Tuesday, July 23rd from 5:30-7:30 PM before the dress rehearsal of Singin' in the Rain.
