Urgent Appeal -- We Need Your Help!!!

For a long time, AFRO has to cover most of the rental and administrative expenses (about HK$50,000 per month). In the past two years, due to the impact of the pandemic on the economy and public fundraising activities, general donations made to AFRO have dropped significantly; in the face of rapid changes in the society, some long-term donors have left Hong Kong and suspended donations.
Our reserves will only cover our operating expenses until June next year. We are therefore appealing for your support to help us through this difficult period. We hope that friends who recognise the value of our work could become our monthly donors. Your monthly donations would be crucial for AFRO's long-term and stable development.
We are grateful for your understanding and support!!! Thank you!

One-Sex Worker-Apartments and the Massage Establishments Ordinance

Fellow sisters may misunderstand and assume that it is not a problem to provide massage service in a  "one-sex worker-apartment", and that by doing so they do not need to face any legal risks. However, when full-body massage is administered to a customer of the opposite sex in an apartment, it will then become a massage establishment which the Massage Establishments Ordinance applies to. Workers inside may be charged with "operating massage establishment with a license"... (Read more)

Meeting the Crime Prevention Bureau

On 7 June 7, AFRO, together with other sex worker support groups organisations, held a bi-annual meeting with the Crime Prevention Bureau of the Police Force. The representative of AFRO brought up at the meeting that a police officer recently refused to issue a copy of the cautioned statement to a sex worker (as an arrested person), and even claimed that she had to ask a lawyer to go to the police station to apply for that in person... AFRO @Hong Kong Palace Museum

Have you ever visited the Forbidden City in Beijing? In the midst of the pandemic, it is difficult for us to visit Beijing in person. Instead, we can pay a visit to the newly open Hong Kong Palace Museum where we can have a glimpse of cultural relics, cultural history and court life of the palace in Beijing. (Details)

5 Hong Kong sex workers contract HIV in past 10 months, concerned health officials investigate if clients have been infected too
(SCMP, 7 July 2022)

Five sex workers in Hong Kong contracted HIV in the past 10 months, which is "unusual" according to health officials, as they investigate if more prostitutes and clients are also infected.

Dr Wong Ka-hing, head of the public health services branch of the Centre for Health Protection, said the new HIV infections among woman sex workers recorded between August in 2021 and June this year were "worthy of concern" and "unusual".

"We have been studying the prevalence rate [of HIV among female sex workers] from time to time. We rarely find HIV infections. Not a single one out of hundreds," he said… (Read full text)

AFRO's Comments:

Anyone who has had sex without a condom has a chance of contracting HIV through sexual contact. AFRO will continue to share important information on the HIV/AIDS and STI prevention with fellow sisters, provide free voluntary HIV and syphilis rapid testing and counselling, and provide follow-up service when necessary. Fellow sisters are welcome to contact us to make an appointment.
