Where to go if you don't know?

NVTAG Symposium: Where to go, if you don't know? Uncertainty in HTA decision making

In the Spotlight: Leiden University Medical Center

We thank our colleagues from MaastrichtHETA for the opportunity to light up this NVTAG newsletter and present our research group Outcomes versus Costs, part of the Medical Decision-Making unit at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC).

Our research group started as a one-man army in 1996 and in 2008 forces were joined with a second health economist. The LUMC research group Outcomes versus Costs has had a strong tradition in cost-effectiveness analysis from the start and performs research in the areas of outcome measurement and more recently also value-based health care (VBHC). Our location within the hospital is ideal for close collaboration with many clinical LUMC departments. We perform applied analyses alongside clinical trials or use mathematical models to combine data from a variety of sources. We additionally conduct methodological research on topics like measurement and valuation of quality of life and wellbeing, measurement of health care costs and productivity losses due to illness, and analytical techniques like disease modelling and multiple imputation. Next to research, we also teach several courses in the curricula for medicine and biomedical sciences.

Market Access Workshop jong-NVTAG - summary

On the 1st of February, the Young-NVTAG board organized a Market Access workshop. Twenty-four participants travelled to Diemen to join the workshop held at Zorginstituut Nederland. The event started with Friso Coerts (Pfizer) giving a great insight into the pathway a new pharmacological drug has to go through to gain access to the market, and get reimbursed. While this process is well documented for pharmaceuticals, this is not necessarily the case for MedTech innovations. Wim Meijer (independent consultant) showed how this process is different for MedTech innovations and how to determine the value proposition of a new MedTech innovation. After an insight from the industry, Philip Klein from Zorginstituut Nederland showed how a government body performs their evaluation and how it comes to an advice to the minister of health.
