HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Photographer Bruce Ellingson had a "Robert Frost moment" at the refuge recently when "two paths diverged in a snowy woods." As 2022 draws to a close, we challenge you to visit and experience your own special moment in nature.
Refuge volunteers and Friends participated in the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count on December 20. With temperatures hovering at and below zero, bird species and numbers were lower than usual. However, the sighting of a golden eagle made it worth venturing into the cold.
It's a lot warmer this week, so get out the snowshoes, skis, or sturdy boots and explore at the refuge! Trails and refuge roads are some places to try; or through February, you can venture off-trail in any areas not marked closed. Look for tracks, nests, otter slides, and other signs of nature that are more visible on snow and without leaves and foliage to obscure the view.
May you find health, happiness, and a sense of wonder in the New Year!
