Spartanburg Mission Report

Success Story

On April 4, we had our fist participant in the Spartanburg Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) graduate.

The mission of the VTC program is to successfully rehabilitate veterans by diverting them from the traditional criminal justice system and providing them with the tools they need to lead a productive and law-abiding lifestyle. Their goal is to reduce veteran’s criminal activity and personally harmful behavior while helping turn their lives around.

Upstate Warrior Solution is helping by identify those veterans in need who are involved with the criminal justice system, offer them assistance, assess their needs, manage their care and help them solve their problems. Our objective is to provide qualified Veterans with substance abuse, alcoholism, and mental health treatment coupled with academic/vocational skills improvement, while actively assisting with residential, outpatient and/or transitional services leading to job placement and job retention.

Looking Ahead

This month, the Spartanburg office will be participating in the annual Military Spouse Appreciation Night located at the University Readiness Center, USC Upstate Campus. There, Upstate Warrior Solution will be able to connect with military spouses and inform them of our upcoming Family Support Programs in the Spartanburg and resources in the surrounding communities.

Greenville Mission Report

Upstate Warrior Solution and members of our Community Action Board supported Greenville Habitat for Humanity during one of their Veteran Builds. The recipient was a Upstate Warrior Solution client who has been working with us for two years now. His home is almost finished and his family of five is really looking forward to having a safe and stable home.

Success Story

A local reserve unit referred a warrior who had recently lost his job and was in need of mental health services to our Greenville team. Within a matter of hours, Upstate Warrior Solution was able to connect with the warrior and refer him to a partner mental health organization who will support him long-term.
We were also able to refer this warrior to an employer who had an opening in his desired field. He interviewed for the position and accepted the job which will ay him a higher salary making him more financially secure.
Upstate Warrior Solution continuously works to build our employment network with partners and employers who see the value of hiring local warriors to their team.

Leadership Update

I hope everyone is doing well and is having a great May. UWS is in the middle of a very busy spring, with our operations teams supporting many warriors and their families and our development team running several community events.  Here are our accomplishments from April and several areas of work for May:

April Accomplishments

1.  Our regional teams had quarterly Community Action Board (CAB) meetings in Spartanburg, Greenville, and Pickens.  Our regional CABs have been meeting for over a year and are composed of 10-15 community leaders who assist our operational offices with resources and strategic engagement.  Focus areas for our three CABs are housing, legal, and family support resource consolidation and building.
2.  We supported a VA Town Hall meeting at USC-Upstate in Spartanburg, learning more about VA Healthcare and Benefits programs, as well as getting to provide feedback to VA leaders from Columbia.
3.  Our April Fellowship Academy was held at Furman University and our Fellows had a communications class from renowned Professor of English, Dr. Lynne Shackelford.
Dr. Shackelford provided very tangible techniques and tools for our Fellows to grow in their communication skills, preparing them for their next career in our corporate community.

May Objectives

1.  Our development team is running several community events this month: Big Break: Warrior Edition IV at Thornblade CC in Greer on 5/16, the Greenville Scottish Highland Games on 5/26, and our annual Cliffs Valley Members Memorial Day golf tournament on 5/28.
2.  We are working with America’s Warrior Partnership, the University of Alabama, and our local county coroners’ offices to implement a national level study on veteran suicide – Operation Deep Dive.  We will be meeting with many of our coroners this month to get this study jumpstarted.
3.  Our operations team is working with several veteran housing partners to find affordable and sustainable housing options for our local warriors and their families.  We are partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville, Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg, and Homes of Hope to generate solutions in this area.

Thanks for your support and partnership, and please check out our organizational calendar on our website for opportunities to get involved in our community over the coming months.

Best regards,
Charlie
