Endorsing the Propositions

It has been this newspaper’s stance to not endorse candidates for public office since our beginnings as an online-only news source in 2013. Our small staff does not yet allow for the editorial distance from the candidates we are covering for us to have an objective editorial board.

While we plan to re-examine the policy of not endorsing candidates as we grow, we believe it is vital this year to take a stand on two of the propositions on most East End ballots this November — on the creation of Community Housing Funds in four of the five East End towns, and on the $4.2 billion statewide Environmental Bond Act that will be a vital tool to fight climate change here.

Survey Shows a Lot Worth Protecting

Preservation of natural habitats, rural character, farms and open space is the top priority of an overwhelming majority of respondents to a survey conducted this summer by the North Fork Civics, a coalition of seven hamlet-based civic groups looking to advocate for residents’ priorities for the future of Southold Town.

The Sweetness of Kuris

I started out with a simple, plant based, one-pan dish using the best of the early fall produce. The beautiful organic Kuri pumpkin that I had purchased at the farmstand would be cooked in a rich and spicy coconut broth with lots of onion and chickpeas. A one-pan dish, indeed, if you do not count the tomato roasting.

If You Build It... It Will Still Be Here in 50 Years

The average life span of a regular house is over 100 years. Skyscrapers are built to have a life span of 75 years. And our thousands of commercial buildings stick around for only about 50 years before they are more cost-effectively crushed to bits, put into a 30-yard container and driven by a diesel-fueled truck to places in Ohio and Pennsylvania 350 miles from here to be dumped in a landfill.
