LIPA Approves Power From Offshore Wind off Montauk Coast

The nine-member Long Island Power Authority Board of Directors unanimously approved the purchase of offshore wind power from the proposed Deepwater ONE site off the coast of Montauk Wednesday morning.

The proposal by Rhode Island-based Deepwater Wind would be the second and largest offshore wind turbine project in United States waters, with 15 turbines providing 90 megawatts of power to the East End of Long Island.

Laura Jens-Smith Announces Plan to Run for Riverhead Town Supervisor

Laura Jens-Smith of Laurel announced Tuesday night that she plans to challenge the seat held by Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter in this fall’s election.

Ms. Jens-Smith, who currently serves as the president of the Mattituck-Cutchogue School Board, ran on the Democratic ticket for a seat on the Riverhead Town Board in 2015. She has also served as Project Coordinator for the North Fork Alliance, a community coalition to reduce youth substance use, and is a former nurse, who worked in the Cardiac Care Unit at Beth Israel Medical Center.

Bassist Bakithi Kumalo, whose work is featured on Paul Simon’s Graceland album, will be on-hand at Peconic Landing on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. for a screening and discussion of “Under African Skies,” which chronicles Paul Simon’s return to South Africa to explore the journey of his Grammy Award-winning Graceland album, including the political backlash he received for allegedly breaking the UN cultural boycott of South Africa designed to end the Apartheid regime.

The Southold Anti-Bias Task Force, Southold Town and Greenport Village are hosting “Synergy Greenport,” an open and respectful conversation between the Southold Town Police and the community on Monday, Jan. 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Agnes School on the corner of 6th Street and Front Street in Greenport. All are welcome to attend. This event was rescheduled from last Monday due to the nor'easter that day.
