Southold Seeks Action on Housing Crisis

It’s been a long time since any affordable housing has gotten off the ground in Southold Town, due in large part to a toxic combination of the high cost of land and opposition to projects that could change the rural nature of the town. Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell is hoping to change that.

East Hampton Town plans to spend the next year looking at the unique issues affecting the commercial areas in East Hampton, Springs, Wainscott, Amagansett, Downtown Montauk and Montauk Harbor, beginning with a kickoff meeting this Tuesday, March 15.

Discussion on Traffic Calming at Mattituck Curve

The Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association has spent the past year gathering ideas from the communityabout how to make the intersection of Route 25, Love Lane and Old Sound Avenue safer for traffic, pedestrians and the community. The civic group will hold a special meeting next Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church to discuss the findings of their survey and make recommendations to Southold Town, New York State and Suffolk County.

Naturalists Host Spring Conference

The fourth annual Long Island Natural History Conference will take place Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19 in the Berkner auditorium at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Topics for discussion will include the southern pine beetle infestation on Long Island, rare birds on Great Gull Island, exotic invasive plants, shellfish restoration in the Great South Bay, eelgrass restoration, sharks in local waters and climate change.
