30 Days in Colorado

(Mission Training International)

For the past month, I have been at MTI (Mission Training International) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. MTI is an organization whose vision is to see cross-cultural messengers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ experience effectiveness, endurance, and personal vitality. The four-week program that I was enrolled in is called COMPASS. This specific training is to help equip its trainees with the tools needed to effectively learn a new language and adapt to living in a new culture.

Over the course of my four weeks, I was able to live in community with other missionaries that have been preparing to leave for the field just as I have been. This program was not specific to Josiah Venture or even the Czech Republic. There were families, couples, and singles coming from all different organizations and moving to all different parts of the world. Places such as Kenya, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Viet Nam, and Egypt. It was a major blessing to go through the training with whom I did. Everyday we were able to share our hearts with one another expressing our joys and our fears, our “yeahs” and “yucks,” and were able to encourage one another and praise God for all that He has done and the gift it has been to be called to the places we are all going.  I look forward to hearing about what God continues to do in and through the new friends that I have made.

What I Learned

The first two weeks were dedicated solely to language acquisition (the best way to otherwise describe this is learning how to learn a language). Everyday we would be in different drill groups working on hearing and pronouncing correctly the different sounds used outside of the 44 sounds that make up our English language. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of sounds that can be made and combined that make up all of the languages around the world.

Knowing the language will be one of the most important tools that I can add to my tool belt while in Czech. Language is ministry. And being a part of a team where good communication is the focus, knowing the language and culture will be vital in the effectiveness of our ministry. Your ministry will only be effective as your language is deep.

“For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.” 1 Corinthians 9:19

Language learning will be my first priority when I move to Czech. When in Czech…do as the Czech’s do!

The second two weeks were spent learning how to thrive while moving into and living in a new culture. Some of the topics we went over were things like how to healthily deal with conflict, managing stress, grief and loss, spiritual vitality, embracing rest and Sabbath keeping, what my entry posture should be as I enter a new culture, and how to say good-byes and hellos well.

Class time wasn’t the only time that I had while in Colorado though. In the evening and on the weekends I would go hiking by myself or with the new friends that I made, play ping pong, cards, watch movies, and play soccer in the snow (what a hoot that was). I also had the awesome opportunity to drive out to Wichita, Kansas to visit my mother’s side of the family. Since our family does not get to see our relatives from Kansas as often as we would like, this became a very sweet and special time to spend with them before heading out to the field. I was able to share my story of what God has done face to face with many of them. The weekend was short and the drive was long, but it was definitely one of the top highlights from my trip this past month. I am very thankful.

As my time came to a close at MTI, I felt a restored sense of excitement and readiness for where the Lord has been leading me. While being on the verge of leaving those whom I have held most close and dear, and the places that have been the most familiar, it is easy for the feelings of fear and anxiety to find a place in mind and heart. God is a God of peace. He is sovereign and has been in control for a very, very long time. Reminding myself of this in prayer and my time with Him has been brought peace and rest to my soul. I am thankful for where the Lord has lead me thus far, and I am so excited for where he is leading me in Czech!

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times in every way.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16

What's Ahead
  • TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY! I am 24 years old. Pray that God would teach me more this year about Himself more than He ever has before.
  • On February 10th-13th, I will be in Virginia to work with an organization called Kumveka where my team and I will be learning affective communication plans, systems, and structures that will help us launch our team well. Very excited for these few days where my team will be together for the first time. Cannot wait until we are all in Czech together!
  • My goal is to be in Czech by the end of March/early April for JV’s spring conference and to prep for the many summer ministries that JV is involved in. Please pray for the Lord’s provision!

I WANT to BE A PART of the 38 !
  • Pray that God would provide partners.
  • Pray that God would be continuing to shape and mold me.
  • Pray that the Lord would continue to bless the time with my family.
  • Pray for the team that I will be working with. That God would bind us together and cause us to love one another well while always having an eternal goal in mind.
  • Pray that I would manage my time well as I hope to depart in between the end of March and the end of April.
  • But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth or rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  Matthew 6:20-21
