|Warning: New "Ransomware" Attacking Companies
|Hello <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,
As a valued client of MB, we want to pass on an urgent warning for all computer users: A vicious virus called Cryptolocker is going around and it can cripple any computer, encrypt all your important local and network files, and leave you out of a hefty sum of cash as you try to resolve the problem. This virus is being delivered as an attachment in emails that appear to come from legitimate sources such as LinkedIN, Intuit, Xerox, etc. We highly recommend you sustain from opening unknown email attachments for the time being. Unlike standard viruses, Cryptolocker holds your computer hostage until you pay a $300 ransom, this is known as Ransomware. According to victim's reports, once the virus hits your computer the only options are to pay the criminals or restore from a previous backup, and there's no way to really know if paying them off will even get rid of the encryption.
To stay safe we recommend:
1) Avoid opening any suspicious email attachments
2) Make sure you are backing up all important data regularly
3) Review your backup logs often to ensure everything is working properly
4) Take your back-up offsite once a week for safe keeping
Spam filtering vendors are currently working hard to mitigate the risk by applying extra resources to block these emails before they're delivered. If you suspect your computer has become infected immediately turn it off or unplug it from the network since it takes some time for the virus to attack all files and folders.
