INSTRUCTOR CHANGE
Due to an unavoidable family appointment, Pat Carr will not be teaching Planning and Plotting for us on Saturday.
However, we know you're eager to get started, soDr. Gary Guinn (bio)will teach instead.
Here's what Gary says about the workshop: My objective for the workshop will be that students (who come with a story idea) will walk out the door with an understanding of the central tension that drives their story, an idea of who the characters will be, a clear idea of the inciting incident, and a first draft of the outline of the events.
We will be listening to your story idea and making suggestions on structure.
If you don't have a story idea, come learn what you need to consider in developing one.
A perfect workshop to help you live the writing dream in 2015 !
If you're an American, you're probably not sitting around with nothing to do. We have so much entertainment, so many possessions, and so many things we "ought" to do, that we have a list of options for every waking moment.
And then, we want to write.
I read that the average American makes over a hundred unthinking food choices daily. Will I eat this or that, will I eat one portion or the whole box? How many choices do we make about how to spend our time? Will I clean house or write? Will I check FaceBook or write?
Often our default answer is: I'll do this and THEN I'll write. Of course, what happens is this or that takes longer than we expected or when we finally get around to writing we're too tired or our creative energy has gone into pithy remarks on FaceBook.
Writers write. That's their default answer to the question: what will I do now? The other stuff waits until the writer has exhausted his creative burst or at least dragged himself through the canebrake of a few more pages. If the writer does put something before his writing, it's because a) he's put said thing off so long it can't wait another minute, or b) something/body is on fire.
If this seems harsh, remember that we have to overcome a lot of procrastination and lethargy. Writing is difficult to begin. Every day, it's difficult to begin. There's nothing like the exhilaration when you put a good passage onto the page. But the exhilaration comes AFTER the work.
This new year, make your default answer be:
I'll write NOW and do the other stuff later.
