Message from the President

Say Yes!

PTA is its members! I join and encourage others to join at every opportunity! Your PTA/PTSA can make this opportunity available at every school event throughout the year reminding your community of the benefits like improved communication and networking, gathering the energy of volunteers into proven programs, tapping into resources, personal growth and another opportunity to be a role model for your children. Our schools and our students see benefits from increased parent involvement. It’s a bargain for all at a great price! 
I hope that your PTA/PTSA unit is off to a great start this year. We have seen many of you at our events this fall and have been able to answer many questions. SCCPTA is a resource for you and can assist with officer training, financial practices, audits, bylaws, membership and other compliance issues. Some of our council members are also available to conduct parent workshops, help with locating informational resources and more. We can arrange a visit at your school, at another location, or set up a scheduled phone call. Just let us know your needs and we will do what we can to help! 

In order for SCCPTA to continue to be a resource for local units, you are invited to bring your experience to the board. Join us! There is still a need for a Cultural Arts/Reflections, Health and Wellness, Scholarship, Resource Development/Business Partners, and Newsletter Chairs to share important information with local units. I can answer any questions you may have about these positions and more.

The search is on for the 2017-2018 National PTA Reflections program theme! 
The student who submits the winning entry will receive $100 and his or her theme will be announced at the National PTA Convention and Exhibition in June 2015. please review the past themes listed in the link below. Repeat themes will not be considered. Use the form on the link to submit theme ideas. Only one entry per student is considered. Multiple entries will not be accepted. Only signed original forms will be considered. No faxes. No emails. 
Submissions must be postmarked no later than October 30, 2015.

As a reminder, the PTA Reflections Program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition at the local, state, or national level. Students in preschool through grade 12 may participate through their PTA/PTSA. Any PTA/PTSA in good standing is eligible to sponsor a Reflections program; each unit must register at,. Units may forward and submit the top 3 entries from their unit for possible recognition at the county, state or National level and must submit their entries to the Seminole County level by December 8, 2015. Second Annual Healthy Children, Healthy Future State Summit
Friday-Saturday, Nov. 13-14, Orlando

In keeping with our long history of advocating for the physical and emotional well-being of every child, Florida PTA has reached out to the medical community, state agencies, community organizations, and school districts to work collaboratively for this event. The summit will bring together PTA leaders, medical professionals, educators, and health and wellness experts from around the state to explore the connection between the physical and emotional wellness of our children. We will learn and share strategies to create, support, and maintain a healthy environment within our schools, communities and homes.

Dr. Walt Griffin has proposed a solution to the FSA issues, which endorses using nationally norm-referenced tests beginning in 2015-2016 in place of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA).

All groups and entities with a federal 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status are required to report gross revenue, regardless of the amount, annually to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The accounting period for all PTA units is July 1st through June 30th, that means sometime between July 1st and No-
vember 15th your unit would report their gross revenue for last year (i.e. July 1st 2014 through June 30 2015).
The revenue amount determines which IRS 990 form to file. 
  • $0.00 to $50,000 file 990-N (e-postcard)
  •  $200,000 or less file 990-EZ or 990 
  • Over $200,000 file 990
(Note: We should not have any units with this high of revenue.)

Note: All revenue must be reported regardless of the purpose or correlating expenses.

MEMBERSHIP may be year long but there are some awards for reaching membership goals early!

Early Bird Award - An award will be given to each local PTA submitting an application and remittance form for state and national dues for 100% membership or any amount over last year's membership:

Silver Early Bird Award—Eligible for this award if you have 100% membership dues paid and received in the Florida PTA Office on or before November 1, 2015.
Bronze Early Bird Award—Eligible for this award if you have 100% membership dues paid and received in the Florida PTA Office on or before December 1, 2015.

Let's increase Membership at every unit this year! One of the many benefits to PTA membership are the discounts to members on a variety of services and products through national PTA's Member Benefits Providers Program. There are many discount providers including AARP, Hertz, LifeLock, MetLife, Schwan's, Staples, and Slyvan. Refer HERE for information on activating your membership card and accessing these benefits. 

In addition to the National PTA member Benefits, Florida PTA members may receive special admission pricing for 1 Day tickets to the LEGOLAND theme park and water park.

Arts Alive in Seminole

This annual fundraiser for the arts is presented by the Foundation for SCPS, and all proceeds are donated to fund performing and visual arts programs in our schools. Arts Alive includes performances by talented SCPS students, teachers, and staff; live and silent auctions; visual art displays by high school AP art students, and a delicious dinner. Money raised at Arts Alive supports district-wide events and programs (including All-County Band and Chorus, and the Seminole County Marching Band Festival), and in addition each school receives a check for the arts teachers to use as needed in their curriculum. Teachers depend on Arts Alive for funds to purchase art supplies, sheet music, theatre costumes and props, and much more. Every student at every school benefits, and we need your support for this great event. PTAs/PTSAs can help by donating items for the silent auction—retail and restaurant gift cards, movie, sports, and theme park passes, gift baskets, and cash donations are needed. Each PTA that donates is acknowledged in the evening’s program. Please help by donating and spreading the word to your members. 

Donations can come in until mid-November, but please let us know you will be donating by Monday, November 2 in order to be included in the program. More information and auction donation forms are available at the Foundation for SCPS website,, or call Jan Harmon at (407)792-9008.

We will have our annual SCCPTA Fundraiser/Program Vendor Event  and Spring Training on Wednesday, May 11 at Lyman High School. Have you had the same fundraiser year after year?  Are you tired of selling magazines or cookies? Why not try something new next year? Join us to discover the possibilities.

October is Children's Health Month! At a very young age, children develop habits and behaviors which will affect their life-long health. Visit the CDC's website to find helpful information. 
Efforts to change policy are the roots of PTA's history. Your phone calls, emails, or meetings with elected officials demonstrates your commitment to creating optimal environments for every child. Change does not happen overnight; advocacy can happen both during and after legislative sessions. Meeting with your legislator while they are in their district offices may make a great impact than when they are in the state capital. The Floria PTA provides excellent information to get creative to make your voice heard and to make your impact great.

A message from the SCCPTA Exceptional Child Chair

We’ve all experienced a situation when we felt like we didn’t belong.  Or how about a time when everyone in the class “got it” but you didn’t understand. It probably made you feel sad, anxious and even angry.  This is what happens every day to hundreds of children in our school district. These children are our Exceptional Child Students.  They don’t learn the same as other children. They need extra help and guidance but they have one thing in common with every child. They want to belong and have friends and they want to learn.  Many times these children can “fall through the cracks” and sometimes aren’t getting the help they need.  Families struggle and don’t know where to turn. They see the struggle and hear the cries from their children and it’s heartbreaking. YOU can help!  PTA is dedicated to help every child.  SCCPTA now has an Exceptional Child Committee.  We are working in partnership with organizations that can help families and give these children a voice.  We would like to encourage you to appoint an Exceptional Child Chair on your PTA.  These chairs will work with SCCPTA to help give these families and children the help they need. Every Child One Voice.
