A message from the President.

After a very brief break during the holidays, PTA is back to work! Thank you to all who attended the SCCPTA Winter Legislative Training event and learned more about the education related legislation to be proposed this year during the legislative session now underway in Tallahassee. Thank you to FlaPTA Legislative Chair, Angie Gallo for sharing her insight. I was able to attend the FlaPTA Legislative Conference soon after and learned more about resources in Tallahassee. I was joined by Abby Sanchez, LBHS PTSA, and Cathy Ross, CIOT PTSA, the two who received our SCCPTA Grant toward their attendance at the Conference.  You and your PTA members can stay informed and be aware of legislative activities in Tallahassee by signing up for alerts from FlaPTA and contacting your legislators. As advocates, you are the voice for all children!

Just as our Founders, Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler, have their roots in advocacy, we are rooted in advocacy today! As we celebrate Founder’s Day this month, SCCPTA would also like to thank those PTA Leaders who have gone before us. Since 1963, there have been 31 Presidents of SCCPTA, 3 of whom have also become FlaPTA President, Sandy Traeger, Nancy Cox, and Jean Hovey. We thank them and all the SCCPTA Presidents for their leadership through the years.

Thank you for all that you do on behalf of PTA for the students, parents and teachers at your school!

Katie Burris, President SCCPTA 2015-2016

Leadership is fundamental!
Good leadership is a key component to the success of any PTA unit. Good leadership creates an atmosphere of support and mutual respect between the members of the PTA unit. Good leadership explores and makes use of the special talents and abilities of its members. Good PTA leaders channel information from Seminole County Council, Florida, and National PTA to their local unit members. Good leaders assist members reach the goals of their unit and keep that unit focused on the PTA Vision and Mission (Vision = Making very child's potential a reality! Mission = To be a powerful voice for all children. To be a relevant resource for families & Communities. To be a strong advocate for the education & well-being of every child). Good PTA leaders conduct productive meetings, follow PTA policies and procedures, and participate in leadership training opportunities throughout the year. Good PTA leaders delegate responsibility and mentor future leaders for their local unit and County Council PTA. Good leaders are not born. Good leaders grow and develop their skills each and every day so click HERE to take a look at these opportunities!

Attention Recording Secretaries!
By this point in the year, your local unit PTA should have conducted a General Meeting and elected a Nominating Committee. Be sure to include the names of the committee members in the Minutes from this General Meeting.

This is also the time to revise the budget if desired and ask the general membership to vote for approval. Remember your part in the financial checks and balances

Remember your part in the financial checks-and-balances of your local unit.  If your treasurer has not been submitting monthly reports, please bring this to your president's attention.

Seminole County students had a wonderful time this year with Reflections, the National PTA's annual arts program.  Thirty six schools participated, and almost 400 winning school entries were advanced to SCCPTA for judging!  Students created visual arts, including some 3D entries, photography, literature, music, film production and dance choreography inspired by this year's theme "Let your Imagination Fly".  We had representation in almost every category within each division.  Three Seminole County Winners in each arts area/division will compete at the State level of the competition.

Congratulations to all of our creative and talented SCPS students, and many thanks to the parents, teachers, and school Reflections Chairs who support the PTA Reflections program.  The County Winners and Honorable Mention Winners will receive their award ribbons and be honored at the SCCPTA Reflections Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 20th at 6 pm at Winter Springs High School.   Non winners who advanced to compete at County will receive a SCCPTA Participation Ribbon later in the Spring.

Good luck to the Seminole County winners who will be competing with other county winners from all over Florida for the State Reflections awards. The Florida Reflections winners will be announced sometime in March. Florida PTA Reflections winners will be honored at a program scheduled for Sat, May 14. More information will follow.

Thank you again for all that you do and for your support of PTA and the PTA Reflections Program!

The Foundation for SCPS, deadline Apr 1
It’s that time of year...Spring is in the air and Nominating Committees have been elected and are hard at work. The work of the Nominating Committee is an important task. A nominating committee composed of at least three members, and always an uneven number, shall be elected at a general meeting at least one month prior to the election of officers. The PTA President should appoint a chair pro tem who shall call the first meeting. The committee can then elect its own chair. The nominating committee shall nominate ONE person for each elected office to be filled and report these nominees at the election meeting. Additional nominations may be made from the floor at that time. In order to be nominated a person must be a member of the PTA. Questions? You may find additional information in your Bylaws and you may contact SCCPTA with questions.

Opportunities are also available to learn more about PTA at the county level and share what you have learned with others. The mission of PTA continues and Seminole County Council needs your support and participation. Click HERE to let us know you're interested.
