Message from the President

The PTA year is underway! PTA is its members, and membership efforts in Seminole County are off to a great start! Thanks to all of you who are making PTA a priority this year. You will be making friends, growing, learning, and working together as you raise funds and plan programs for your school community. In the process, you will become an advocate, an opportunity unique to PTA. In adding your voice to those of others, you are becoming part of the ongoing mission of PTA to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. PTA does its best work when members work together, in one voice for every child.
You will have the opportunity to first use your voice as you vote in November. We have the right and the responsibility to cast an informed vote, using reliable resources, aligning your priorities, to select legislators from president to state and local officials.  PTA will continue to advocate for all children when those elected officials assume their offices in our communities, in Tallahassee, and in DC.
Florida PTA has selected several Legislative priorities to address including a focus on those most under-served children in order to improve the future of our communities. Juvenile Justice, Homelessness, and Foster Care will be addressed along with Early Childhood opportunities, ESSA, the Well being of all Children and more. You can receive important Legislative information by signing up for Voters Voice, ‘click here
It will be a busy PTA year, thank you for being a part of it. Thank you for adding your voice to the many others in PTA. But first, use your voice to vote!
Thank you for all you do on behalf of PTA,
Katie Burris, President SCCPTA

Membership Matters

Thanks for a successful September Membership kick off! Do you have 100 or more members already? If so, send an email to with the name of your school and County Council. FL PTA would like to recognize your unit!  Remember, you must send monthly Membership dues payments to FL PTA for the membership cards sold.
Financial Facts
Gift cards anyone???
A PTA runs the risk of losing their tax exempt status in using PTA funds to purchase gift cards.  The IRS views gift cards as cash and we cannot be giving cash away as it is difficult to document how it is spent! This has been causing a lot of confusion for local units and county councils. The easiest way to handle this to avoid purchasing gift cards for anyone. Certainly you can solicit gift cards as donations from businesses to give-aways for any PTA event!
All PTAs must file an IRS 990 form by November 16th and forward the filing confirmation to FL PTA:  compliance

Other Reminders:
  • All PTAs must also be sure to send a copy of the completed audit to FL PTA if you have not already done so.
  • Your unit must pay one time County Council dues of $50 by Sept 30. A list of those units who have paid dues can be found on the SCCPTA website.
Lunch and Learn! Meet with your SCCPTA Treasurer and President!
Bring your note books, your check book, whatever you need help with. We will be available at the following times and locations to answer your questions on Friday, November 11, 2016:
  • 9:30-11:30am  Panera Bread, 864 S Sun Dr, Lake Mary
  • 12:00p-2:00pm   Panera Bread, 205 E Mitchell Hammock Road, Oveido
By-Laws Help
Having current and updated Bylaws is important to running your PTA.  Bylaws should be reviewed and updated at least every three years.  They must be voted on by your general membership before submitting them to Florida PTA for approval.  If you are not sure whether or not your Bylaws are due for review, you can contact our SCCPTA Bylaws Chair, Mary Barker,, to check on the status of your unit’s Bylaws.

For helpful directions, tips, a blank 2016-2017 Bylaws form, and a link to submit them online, go to the Florida PTA website.  Under the “Running Your PTA” tab is a link to all the information you need to complete the review and submission of your Bylaws.
Thank you to our Scholarship Fund Donors!
Each year SCCPTA awards scholarships to Seminole County high school seniors in order to help them continue their education. Scholarships are awarded to students attending a four year college or university; a two year state or community college; and vocational/technical programs. (The application is available on the SCCPTA website). Scholarships are funded by donations, primarily from our member PTA/PTSAs.

Many thanks to the following local units who have made contributions as of October 1: Bentley Elem., Crystal Lake Elem., English Estates Elem., Evans Elem., Geneva Elem., Goldsboro Elem., Hagerty High, Lake Brantley High, Lake Mary Elem., Lake Mary High, Lake Orienta Elem., Chiles Middle, Markham Woods Middle, Millennium Middle, Milwee Middle, Oviedo High, Partin Elem., Red Bug Elem., Sabal Point Elem., Stenstrom Elem., Tuskawilla Middle, Wicklow Elem., Wilson Elem., Winter Springs Elem., Woodlands Elem.

Thank you so much for your generosity and for helping our students’ dreams come true! Donations to the 2016-2017 Scholarship fund will be accepted through March 31, 2017.
Cultural Arts/Reflections
The 2016-2017 Reflections theme is “What is Your Story?” Do you know a student who has a great idea for the Reflections theme? The winning 2017-2018 theme, “Within Reach”, was submitted in 2016 by Ben Berselli of Shady Grove PTA, VA. Now the search is underway for the 2018-2019 theme, the 50th Anniversary of the PTA Reflections Program two years from now!

The 2018-2019 Theme Search forms must be postmarked no later than November 16, 2016. The form has the mailing address for Florida PTA. This contest goes straight from home to the state office. All the PTA/PTSA needs to do is complete the bottom portion, copy then distribute. Only one idea per student is allowed. Multiple ideas from one student will disqualify all submissions from the student.

PTA/PTSAs, download the Theme Search form (Theme Search Entry Form).

Thank you for your support of the Reflections program. Don’t forget to register your unit with National PTA for participation in the program. The date for submitting winning local artwork to SCCPTA is Dec 1, location TBA.

Good luck to all our creative Seminole County students!
Health and Safety
November is National PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month. Because research shows healthy children may achieve and learn more, PTAs are encouraged to demonstrate their commitment to promoting health and wellness in their communities throughout the month. Your PTA can participate by conducting programs and events that promote health education, physical activity and parental involvement. For more information and program ideas, click here.

Are you interested in including your teachers in health related programs? Your school may have a Wellness Champion among the staff members who may be willing to collaborate with PTA.

Many of these types of programs are also appropriate for SCCPTA MiniGrant, funded by Prevention Coalition. Your PTA may be approved for up to $300 for funding to use for a related program. Find the grant application on the SCCPTA website.
The Foundation for SCPS Arts Alive Team is hard at work putting everything together for the big night on November 12th and would love to give our local units the opportunity to support this fantastic cause. All of the proceeds raised at this amazing performance and auction are donated to support arts programs in our schools, including district wide events like All County Band/Chorus and the Marching Band Festival, and art related grants awarded to every school for their arts curriculum.
Our district continues to offer strong arts education for our children with music and art offered in every school. Our teachers depend on money raised at Arts Alive to buy art supplies, sheet music, theater costumes, props and much more.
Please show your support by making a donation to Arts Alive. Any gift/donation is greatly appreciated no matter how big or how small and every PTA/PTSA that donates by Monday,October 24th will be acknowledged in the program, others may be recognized at the event if received later. All sorts of things are needed for the auction, gift baskets, funds for the purchase of gift cards, and more!
Thank you for your support of Arts Alive! If you have questions, please contact me, Beth Dostal, SCCPTA Foundation Representative.
