Message from Jeanne

We have had a very busy start to 2014.  As you will see from the photos below, members enjoyed another great ASBA/Baltic reception with close to 200 in attendance. It was so very nice to see so many members from all over the country in Stamford at this event which kicks off the CMA Shipping event.   An excellent group of members and their guests enjoyed our annual New York area golf outing.  I want to give a shout out to west coast members, John Ellis and Jennifer Montgomery of Pacific Rim Shipbrokers, who traveled from Bainbridge Island, Washington to host a foursome. Despite a weather pattern that has developed on our golf outing dates, lots of rain the night before and early morning that clears by tee time, a great time was had by all.

Spring has been busy for me as well.  I attended the National Association of Maritime Organizations meeting in Washington, D.C. where we have the pleasure of discussing relevant issues with headquarters staff from CBP, Coast Guard and MARAD.  The CIANAM Annual Meeting (Americas group of the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents) was hosted in Guayaquil, Ecuador where I was joined by Mike Ogle, our Agency Affairs representative, and Marygrace Collins as President of FONASBA.  National and international contracts made through ASBA's participation in these associations has proven to be invaluable in advancing many of the objectives of our members.

One last note of interest, I was invited by a member who serves on Associate Member Committee of INTERTANKO to address their General Council in New York City on May 7. Our ASBA Certification celebrates its 10 year anniversary in 2015.  We took this opportunity to address the General Council, update them on the status of our Certification and the FONASBA Quality Standard and recommend (challenge) INTERTANKO to do more to recognize quality agency service providers in the USA and 21 other FONASBA country member associations who are now issuing the Quality Standard.  Remember, member agents pay significantly more each year to renew their certification.  NOW is the time for the industry to embrace "quality" by asking the following question, "Has the agency company been awarded the ASBA Certified or FONASBA Quality Standard?", as step one in their agency vetting process.

The Cargo Conference committee is busy at work coordinating another great program. Registration is now open, September 24-26, Eden Roc, Miami Beach.
Hope to see you all there!

Many thanks for your continued support.  Enjoy the summer months.

ITIC  WARNING

A scam has come to their attention which has resulted in pre-funded port costs being diverted to a fake bank account.  In each case the party due to make the payment has received an email advising that the agent's bank account is inoperable because of their annual audit.  The message is sent using an email address very similar to the agent's address.  Details of a different bank account are given for the payment.  By the time the agent reports the pro forma disbursement account has not been paid, fraudsters have already stolen the money.
