The UK Hate Crime Network Group on LInkedIn now has over 465 members across the UK

NationalHCAW Newsletter 2022

By Mark Healey

Welcome to issue 06 of our UK Hate Crime Sector Newsletter.

Have you join the UK Hate Crime Network group on LinkedIn? We have gained another 65 members since our last newsletter and are keen for the group to become the national forum for the hate crime sector - a place where we can network, strengthen our connections and collaborate with each other.

Imagine how much it would strengthen our sector if we could encourage representatives from all the police services, all the councils, and all the anti-hate crime organisations to join the group.

We need to encourage everyone to join, and to start sharing information about the numerous anti-hate crime projects that we are all involved in delivering. A forum to access and share knowledge, to advertise training courses and promote work opportunities.

Call to action:

If you are not a member - join the UK Hate Crime Network group on Linkedin today (you'll need a Linkedin profile to access and request to join the group). Consider inviting other hate crime collegues as well - let's get the national hate crime conversation started.

Admiral Duncan Fundraiser raised £130.47

We would like to thank everyone at the Admiral Duncan who helped us raise £130.47 for 17-24-30 NationalHCAW on Friday 29th April 2022.

Each year we work in partnership with the local police (Central West BCU), Westminster Council, the London Fire Brigade, the London Ambulance Service, St Anne's Church, the Admiral Duncan, and members of the LGBT+ community to organise the Soho Act of Remembrance.
Hundreds attend Soho Act of Remembrance 2022

The 23rd anniversary of the Soho nail bomb attack on the Admiral Duncan Soho was marked by a return to the traditional in-person gathering at the bar on Old Compton Street, a procession round to St Anne's Gardens on Wardour Street, for the Soho Act of Remembrance in the garden.

It was a busy bank holiday weekend, with hundreds of people in and around Old Compton Street. There was a large gathering at the Admiral Duncan and over a hundred and fifty people took part in the service in the gardens.
Remembering Nick Moore, Andrea Dykes and John Light killed in the Admiral Duncan (30th April 1999), and David Morely (Cinders) who survived the attack only to be killed on the South Bank 5 years later.
We've recruited more Trustees

Since our last newsletter we have recruited four more trustees - Danni Glover (Scotland), Pek-San Tan (CARG), Debbie Charles (East of England) and Scott Longman (City of London). We now have a board consisting of 11 Trustees - with one more in the pipeline.
We've are looking for volunteers in London

We need volunteers to help us with the delivery of our projects - we plan to return to in-person volunteer sessions which will be helded between 10 am to 5 pm on Monday and Tuesdays.

If you would like to join our team please get in touch.

Naomi Bennett joins the team as our Administrative Consultant

Naomi started with us in May and is helping us adapt to using Monday.com and Airtable.
Freedom of Information Research Project

We have submitted Freedom of Information requests to every police service and every council across the UK.

The police research will enable us to review changes to the police hate crime sector over a three year period (2019-2022), giving us a picture of what has changed following the covid-19 pandemic.

The council research will enable us to review what has changed over the last five years (2017-2022).

We plan to have a preliminary assessment by mid-July.

Reference and Resource Folders

We are working on the airtable database that we are creating to faciliate the management of the information we are gathering to put the folders together.

We are planning to deliver the first batch of folders to Croydon libraries by mid-July.

Initally these folders will provide quite basic information, with plans to develop and expand their content over the next few years.

We are also planning to give read-only access to airtable users to some of the public information we are gathering for the folders - more details will follow in our next newsletter.

Intersex Progressive Pride Flag
Intersex Progressive Pride Flag Project

In January, our Rainbow Boroughs Project raised funds to  purchase new flags for all of the newly elected London Borough Mayors, the Lord Mayors of the City of London and Westminter, and the Mayor of London.

David Watters helped us research the contact details of the newly elected Mayors.

The flags were purchased in February and have been dispatched by recorded delivery to all of the Mayors in May, just in time for the beginning of June and the start of Pride Season.

We will be contacting all of the Mayors to check they have received their flags, and to find out what they have done with them. We have also provided them the link to our community calendar so they know some of the key dates throughout the year when they can fly the flag for the LGBT+ Community.

Will you march with us at Pride on the 2nd July?

We have secured 70 wristbands to particpate in the Pride in London Parade taking place on Saturday 2nd July 2022. This year is a significant year for the Pride movement and the LGBT+ community as we commemorate 50 years since the first Pride took place in the United Kingdom.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, with Rainbow Boroughs Project members, 17-24-30 NationalHCAW volunteers and the family/friends of those directly affected by the Admiral Duncan nail bomb attack.

18 July 2022 - NationalHCAW Summer Meeting

We are starting to make preparations for our next online Zoom meeting, our Summer meeting which will take place on Monday 18th July 2022.
  • Discussions finalising plans for National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2022
  • Networking opportunities
  • Presentations

NB: Our onlines meetings are aimed at Hate Crime Sector professionals working across the UK, people who work and volunteer for anti-hate crime groups and organisations. We want to create opportunities for networking, communication and collaboration across the sector.

The meetings are not aimed at individuals experiencing hate crime or to provide a forum for cases/casework to be discussed - victims of hate crime should be directed to organisations that take on casework - as listed on the Reporting Hate Crime page on our national website.

  • UK Police Services - linking to all of the police services.
  • UK Councils - linking to all of the council websites.

  • Support - linking to organisations that provide support (but not hate crime reporting).
  • Information - linking to sites that contain hate crime information.
NationalHCAW (https://linktr.ee/nationalhcaw)
  • All the links you need to get connect with our charity and get involved in National Hate Crime Awareness Week.
HateCrime (https://linktr.ee/hatecrime)
  • We are going to use this Linktree profile to promote the UK Hate Crime Network group on Linkedin and create a national listing of all anti-hate crime organisations across the UK Hate Crime Sector. We are still working on this profile.
RainbowBoroughs (https://linktr.ee/rainbowboroughs)
  • We are using this Linktree profile to promote our Rainbow Boroughs Project (see link in community section below).
We will be including these simple Linktree url links on our website, on our posters and leaflets and on our hate crime reporting cards.

Wales Hate Crime Support Centre

Victim Support Cymru (Wales) have been commissioned by Welsh Government to deliver the ‘Wales Hate Support Centre for the next 3 years (2022-25) with a possible 2 year extension.

The project consists of two delivery strands:

Support for people affected by hate: A wide range of emotional and practical support is available independently of police involvement. The service is available for anyone affected by hate – this includes hate crime, incidences and sub-criminal hate such as some online hate. Victims, witnesses and the families of victims can access the service. Young people over the age of 13 are able to access the service independently.

Support for communities: Engagement with organisations and grass roots groups that connect with people more likely at risk of experiencing hate. The Training & Engagement Team are able to support communities through free-to-access training, engagement and partnership working. Under the new programme the team will be developing the training portfolio further to meet the needs of communities in Wales, including online hate, Allyship and bystander approaches to hate.

In addition, the service will continue to:
  • Provide opportunities for Hate Crime Leaders
  • For organisations to sign-up to the Hate Crime Charter
  • Work with partners to grow cohesion, develop innovation and initiatives across our communities in Wales
  • Develop a Victims Voice forum to steer the service
  • Bring key strategic partners together on a regular basis through an Advisory Board
