NationalHCAW Newsletter 2022

By Mark Healey

Welcome to issue 04 of our hate crime sector newsletter.

Sylvia Lancaster, mother of Sophie Lancaster, passed away suddenly on the 12th April 2022. I first met Sylvia when she joined us at  our annual service of 'Hope and Remembrance for those affected by Hate Crime' in 2014. She lit the national candle in memory of her daughter Sophie, and it remained alight in St Paul's Cathedral for the duration of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

This is a great loss to Sylvia's family and friends, to her colleagues at the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, and across the UK Hate Crime Sector. She was a formidable force for change, she fought for what she believed in and her legacy is that Sophie will never be forgotten.

In the past couple of month's we've lost two upstanding beacons of hope from our sector. It is important that we remember their names and make sure that their light continues to shine in our work for generations to come.

Call to action;

Please join the UK Hate Crime Network group on LinkedIn and share your thoughts about how we can work together to support one another across the UK.

Our Rainbow Boroughs Project have secured 70 wristbands to march at Pride on the 2nd July

We have secured 70 wristbands to particpate in the Pride in London Parade taking place on Saturday 2nd July 2022. This year is a significant year for the Pride movement and the LGBT+ community as we commemorate 50 years since the first Pride took place in the United Kingdom.

We plan to march with the Admiral Duncan Act of Remembrance banner and use our space on the march to raise awareness about our anti-hate crime work. We want to remember those who should be marching with us - but who have had their lives cut short through acts of hatred.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, with Rainbow Boroughs Project members, 17-24-30 NationalHCAW volunteers and the family/friends of those directly affected by the Admiral Duncan nail bomb attack.

18 July 2022 - NationalHCAW Summer Meeting

We are starting to make preparations for our next online Zoom meeting, our Summer meeting which will take place on Monday 18th July 2022.
  • Discussions finalising plans for National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2022
  • Networking opportunities
  • Presentations

NB: Our onlines meetings are aimed at Hate Crime Sector professionals working across the UK, people who work and volunteer for anti-hate crime groups and organisations. We want to create opportunities for networking, communication and collaboration across the sector.

The meetings are not aimed at individuals experiencing hate crime or to provide a forum for cases/casework to be discussed - victims of hate crime should be directed to organisations that take on casework - as listed on the Reporting Hate Crime page on our national website.
