NationalHCAW Newsletter 2022
By Mark Healey
Welcome to issue 19 of our UK Hate Crime Sector Newsletter.
Firstly, I would like to express my thanks to CARG, the Campaign Against Racism Group who we have worked with this year to raise awareness of the increasing levels of Race Hate Crime experienced by the East and Southeast Asian communities.
I hope we have encouraged many people to stand together in solidarity with you this year - and that we will continue to do so, working together for many years to come.
As we come to the end of 2022 it is a time to start looking forward to 2023, and I am pleased to announce that the theme for the year ahead will be Faith Hate Crime.
We will be working with CST, the Community Security Trust to raise awareness of their important work.
It is a great opportunity for everyone affected by Hate Crime to stand in solidarity with all Faith communities affected by Faith Hate Crime, especially Jewish communities affected by Antisemitism.

UK GOVERNMENT PETITION - UPDATE HATE CRIME ACTION PLAN AND INCREASE ACTIONS TO TACKLE HATE CRIME
The Government's hate crime action plan ran from 2016 to 2020, and has not been replaced. We want the Government to produce an updated hate crime action plan, and introduce new duties for local authorities and the police to tackle hate crime.
Police Recorded Hate Crime (HC) in England and Wales 155,641 up 26% Race HC 109,843 up 19% Religious HC 8,370 up 37% Homophobic HC 26,152 up 41% Disability HC 14,242 up 43% Transphobic HC 4,355 up 56%.There should be no place for hate in the UK.
The Government should prepare a comprehensive hate crime action plan, and update legislation to create statutory duties for the police and local authorities to produce local hate crime action plans.
We also call on the Government to support initiatives like National Hate Crime Awareness Week and to actively encourage the authorities, key partners and communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle all forms of Hate Crime across the UK.
Please add your support today.

Petition Map
One of the interesting features of the UK Government and Parliament Petition website is the feature that enables you to view the constituencies where people are signing the petition.
At the time of the above screen print we had 110 signatures on the map - we have a lot of work to do to get the 10,000 signatures we need to get a goverment response to this campaign, and even further to reach the 100,000 signatures we need to get the petition considered for a debate in Parliament.
This map will show us where we are gaining support, and where we need to work harder to get people on board to get tackling hate crime back on the national agenda.
With your support - we will do it.

Using Restorative Justice for faith-based hate crime
With rising hate crime in the UK, including religious hate crime, there is an urgent need to find new approaches to strengthening community interfaith relations.
As part of Interfaith awareness week and Restorative Justice week, Why me? partnered with Faith Belief Forum to begin conversations about how we might begin to address faith-based hate crime in a way that prioritises healing and moving forward.
