The latest book I just read was,
THE TRAIL DRIVERS OF TEXAS
I have never before realized how much the cattle drives and bison intertwined and how the bison played a big part in the story of the historic drives. I placed several of the Drovers memories from the days before the railroads dominated the plains . I had no idea that so many crossed right here in Gainesville, TX ., and some further west. Doan's Crossing was a special find for me. I hope you find it as enlightening as I did.

Conserving Bison in Indiana.
Yes, Indiana.
The Nature Conservancy is continuing to expand its bison conservation program, and now the animals are moving east. This fall, the shaggy beasts will be reintroduced to Kankakee Sands, a Nature Conservancy preserve in northern Indiana.

Southern Plains Pointers: Sep 2016
The southern plains have experienced an unprecedented summer with perfect rains and lots of forage. Normally this time of year is marked by brown fields and ‘dusting in’ fall crops. This year, we are looking for dry spots to be able to get into the field. If you have been under stocked during this cycle, you will be blessed with bigger grass inventories next year.
When planting for grazing, it is more productive to plan for diversity. This is different than those who plan to graze crops also planned for harvest. Diversity means: multiple seed types in your planting mix for graze. You will find many advantages to this program if you study what happens. Succession, which means that each plant type develops on a different schedule, provides the herd multiple periods in which plants are highly selectable or palatable, as well as at their peak nutritional contribution. Planting diversity can also assure the herd of ‘something’ out there – if the winter turns weird. Personally, I like no less than 4 to 5 seed types in my winter graze mix. It is also important to remind you that a calculation applies to your planting in order to be feasible. You should plan, and plant, no more than 2 to 3 acres per AU. Pasture rotation, even in the winter, is a good idea. You can adjust your rotations in the cooler months whereas the life cycle of the parasites ‘may’ be different depending upon the temperature.
|
|
The other plan that should be made this time of year is working the herd, and marketing. Both are dynamic and I recommend analysis before planning. If you have forage reserves, then you can plan to market according to a window of highest return from those reserves. If you are pushing your forage inventory to its limits, then it is wiser to plan rather than react to crisis. The market for bison is strong and steady, but now more than ever, quality matters if you want a good price and quality has everything to do with herd health programs and condition.

National Bison Association
Price Reduction Announced for Conservation Herd Registry
During the NBA Board of Directors meeting held August 18, 2016, the North American Bison Registry recommended a price reduction for participation in the Conservation Herd Registry [CHR]. The recommendation was approved unanimously in the interest of economics for the membership.
The price change includes a reduction to $110 for entry to the CHR and $50 for the annual report fee.
Learn more about the NABR and the CHR at http://bisoncentral.com/about-nba/bison-registry and please note, the new NBA website that is currently under construction will include an online application and payment for these services and will be available soon.
The CHR was innovated by the NABR, and approved by the NBA, to help tell the story of bison ranching as a species restoration vehicle, which is identified indisputably as integral to the most successful post-bottleneck wildlife recovery in the history of the planet.
Additionally, The NABR submitted its official position on 'Pure' and 'Pure bison' for the conversations that seem to focus on bison purity in the media, that it may be available to the NBA for use as a disclaimer and educational post-script.
The positions and opinions reflected in this article are not necessarily shared by the North American Bison Registry (NABR).
Whereas the NABR charges itself with discovering and recording bison heritage, the inclusion of all remnant Bison genetics is our mission to ensure that the future of bison conservation is secure. Until it is proven that absolute purity is significant, and can be indisputably identified, the NABR includes all Bison for their genetic contribution, but excludes recent introgression, i.e. hybrids, by process of genetic testing and ethical management.
