Bison Cause Problems At The Grand Canyon
In recent years a herd of bison have made the Grand Canyon home. And they're causing some problems. The park is looking to the public for input.

DROUGHT
"Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it."  There's always a drought lurking around the corner, it seems.  How you prepare for and manage it will go far in the price you pay at the end.  Personally, I believe in thinking and planning over spray, pray and pay agriculture.
Here in Texas, ranch life is ruled by the weather. I grew up dryland farming and ranching through some pretty humbling droughts that caused us to get innovative in our drought survival strategies.  Most of our place was a sand dune to start with and we'd watch helplessly as the clouds would build up and dissipate or part around us.  Our average annual rainfall was supposed to be 32" and we scored a whopping 16" in 2.5 years.
Priority one is hard culling.  Since it's difficult to know the duration of a drought, wishful thinking can get us in trouble by overtaxing our resources.  If you damage your perennial pasturelands early in a drought, what are you gonna get by on when it really turns into a she-bear?  Keep your best performing stock, keep a constant eye fixed on health of the pasture and have a continous culling plan throughout the drought... or pay for hay along the way and see how much money you spent on holy cows.
Texas was at one time a sea of tallgrass prairie that no one believed could be subdued. However we're now lucky to find prairie remnants.  If you take care of your native grasses, they will take care of you.  Most exotic grasses just don't have a root system to compare.  Our 80 acres of switchgrass bottomland and 150 acres of little bluestem are really what carried us through, with the exception of weeping lovegrass.  Bermuda and natives can coexist.  Many perennial forbs like cut-leaf daisy and bundleflower are important as well.  Don't underestimate the value of weeds in these situations.  Depending on species, some weeds can handle droughts well and offer viable nutrition if not select palatability.
Cool season annual food plots make lots of sense/cents since we are more likely to see our rainfall in the fall - spring window.  Triticale, cereal rye, wheat, ryegrass, vetch, arrowleaf clover, turnips, etc.  Forward stockpile any excess as hay or silage.
High density rotational paddock-shift grazing.  Cross-fencing is a must anytime.  Herbivores grazing shoulder to shoulder to clip the grass sward low and then getting out for the grass to recover is how it is meant to be in the time honored tradition of nature.  Learn to be a good grass steward.
Woody browse.  We kept our wooded areas fenced out and didn't 'graze' until we got to the peak of summer.  Oak, pecan, elm, hackberry, honey locust and greenbriar are the best but others will do.  Purposely planting woody plants into your grazing system as a savannah or silvopasture is a great practice.  Planting hedges of thornless prickly pear as a drought backup plan is another great idea.
Taking care of the soil health also pays big dividends.  If your soil resembles a rock more than a sponge, you have work to do.  Organic matter holds water, nutrients, feeds beneficial soil organisms and many other positive services.  Don't plow your land into oblivion and don't let it become heavily compacted either.  Aeration, whether mechanical or biological, allows the development of robust root systems which translates to staying power.
Last but not least is strategic water conveyance.  Keyline design was pioneered in Australia and is cutting edge infrastructure technology to make best use of the rain that falls on your ground.  One of these days the good people of the USA will have a face in palm moment and say,"why haven't we been doing this all along?"
Waste not, want not.  In the end, be glad we're not in the Atacama desert and may you have a happy next drought cycle!

It was Matthew Brown of the Associated Press who wrote that the “tens of millions of bison” in the 19th century were wiped out by hunters. I say Poppycock.

Now it's the NWF's (National Wildlife Federation) Steve Woodruff who is echoing almost those same words in an effort to raise public support and “'pull out all the stops' in an effort to FORCE” (his word, not mine) “establishment of a free-roaming bison herd in North Central Montana.”

Woodruff also wrote that “ ranchers who see bison as a perceived, not real threat to and competitor for cattle could thwart these efforts. Yaaa, Go Ranchers!!

Vail Daily column: Sad story of bison has hopeful ending
All of these bison were interbred with domestic cattle at some point in time. The only bison population that remained wild was the Yellowstone herd ...
Of the 500,000 bison in the world in 2002, only 4 percent were in herds managed for conservation. The rest were primarily in herds managed as livestock for their production of meat. These animals were routinely interbred with cattle for traits beneficial to meat production. Traits beneficial to meat production, including rapid growth of marbled muscle tissue and docility, would not be beneficial to wild bison. Even the 20,000 or so bison which are in herds managed for conservation have almost all been interbred with cattle at some point in time. For much of the 20th century, a large portion of the bison population was bred primarily for meat production. This meant that wild traits were bred out and desirable traits for domesticated animals were preferred.......

Southern Plains Pointers - May 2014

Well we’ve had a little rain. Some more than others and that’s just the way it is. While our neighbors in the bison world from the north draw a deep breath and let a sigh of relief after last winter, I envy their relief as I brace for making crucial decisions, planning ahead and watching closely how our herds handle summer in the southern plains. We’re not there yet, but the heat lamps-a- comm’in, and like us, our bison will slow down and shift many behaviors to cope.

Our job is to strategically plan to save pastures that provide the ability of the bison to perform natural behaviors in response to the dog-days which are inevitable. Now is the time to plan for such strategies instead of being caught without any alternatives. Personally, if I have a brushy pasture that is full of mesquite, I consider that pasture an ace up my sleeve and leave it for later in case we go dry. When we’re dry, in many regions of Texas and the southern plains, mesquite and other bean producing trees and brush will be at peak production. Conversely when we have a wet year, the beans don’t come as much. Saving those rotation options until summer reveals itself, is a strategic pasture rotation plan. If you have no cross-fencing to provide for pasture rotation, the bison will be mesquite-magnets if things get tuff. The beans are highly nutritious and come off in sync with the seasonal breeding season of bison.

Other behaviors that shift in response to the southern plains summers include the bison becoming more nocturnal in their grazing habits, more [brushed up] during the middle day, more riparian system interactive, and hopefully more exposed to their human counterparts playing along by interacting with them only at dusk or evening.

For now; enjoy what’s left of spring, conserve your resource-strongholds, keep and start planning for the worst. The bison will tell you what strategy to employ, if you keep an eye on
them and listen…

NBA Challenges USDA Bison Values on Drought Assistance

The National Bison Association today contacted the USDA Farm Service Agency with an offer to assist in establishing the valuations that are being utilized by the Farm Service Agency for producers who are filing for Livestock Indemnity Payments as a result of drought and other adverse weather conductions in recent years.

The NBA contacted the FSA office in Washington, D.C. after being informed this week that the agency was valuing bison calves in a range of $500 - $600 in 2012. Based on the results from appropriate bison sales in that time frame, bison calves were selling at about $800 - $1,000.

NBA producers applying for assistance under the Livestock Indemnity Program or the Livestock Forage Program are encouraged to contact NBA Executive Director Dave Carter at david@bisoncentral.com with information regarding the valuation being utilized in each area.

U.S. Bison Herd Down 18% in Latest Ag Census

The U.S. bison herd shrank by 18 percent from 2007 to 2012 according to the latest U.S. Department of agriculture Census of Agriculture Statistics released today in Washington, D.C.

According the figures unveiled at noon, EDT today, 162,110 bison were reported on 2,564 farms in 2012, compared to 198,234 bison on 4,499 farms in 2007. The Ag Census is conducted every five years, and represents a snapshot of the agricultural conditions present at the time of being conducted.

In an announced accompanying the release of the latest batch of data, officials with the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service acknowledged that the 2012 figures for all commodities reflected the impact of the serious drought in much of the major agricultural regions in the United States.

Dave Carter, executive director of the National Bison Association, said, "We anticipated that there would be some reduction in numbers because of the drought, but these numbers clearly illustrate the import challenges we face in keeping pace with growing consumer demand. Getting more bison on the land is the first step toward getting more bison meat in restaurants and retail stores.

Carter said that the association believes that the 2,564 producers identified by census-takers reflects a more realistic picture of the U.S. bison industry, than the 4,499 farms identified in 2007. We never felts that 4,499 bison producers were operating in the United States."

According to the new census figures, South Dakota retains the ranking as the top bison producing state, with 33,637 animals. However, the inventory of bison in 2012 was 5,064 animals less than in 2007. The other top five states in the latest census were:
  • Nebraska (23,152 in 2012 vs 17,859 in 2007);
  • Montana (14,671 in 2012 vs 14,565)
  • Colorado (10,731 in 2012 vs. 15,474 in 2007; and
  • Oklahoma (9,685 in 2012 vs. 10,344 in 2007)
The Census measures bison being produced on private farms and ranches in the United States. Most animals in public herds are not included in the Census report.
